Hamish read engineering at Edinburgh and through his books, talks and workshops his work on earth energies has earned him an inter-national reputation. He co-wrote In Search of the Southern Serpent with his New Zealander friend, Barry Brailsford They combined their special talents to create a book that takes readers on a journey into the power of place. The western mind of the pagan, the priest and the scientist encounter the Maori lore of the shamanic mind, they don't collide - instead they gently touch to open doors of many kinds. Hamish was a good friend of film-maker Robin Kewell and there will also be a showing of part of an exclusive interview that he did with these two 'wise men' on top of an ancient Iron Age settlement in West Cornwall plus a short film of Hamish in his workshop. Shot by Napier-based Cloud Nine Films, this recently released, award-winning documentary is the story of Peter and Colleen Karena. They are in their early 30?s. They have six children and 50 horses. ?This Way of Life? is a film about freedom. It is about risk and wilderness and how one family chooses to live more connected to wild nature than the shiny life of the mall. The film captures a way of life and a consciousness that has almost disappeared, a life where self-sufficiency is central, where time is not money, it encompasses an understanding of a tangible relationship with nature and natural morality - unframed by regulation or compromise. With lectures and slideshows, comments from pupils past and present we are privileged to observe the interaction and atmosphere created by one of the most inspiration teachers of art.
