Rachel Mooney - Time that Lapsed West Coast Gallery 17 October - 8 November This exhibition is a collection of Rachel's west coast time-lapse landscape images. The photography work is done when all available daylight is gone, each image is taken over a period of time, and tracks the motion of stars,clouds and any moving light .... this gives the images their surreal look and is evidence of the mysterious and beautiful way the universe works. The consultation is being run by Harley Spence from Coastline Consultants, assisted by Jim Dahm. People will have full opportunity to express their ideas and expectations for Piha Beach conservation (or not). At 10.30. 12.00 and 1.30, Jim will give a 30 minute talk about West Coast beach processes, including some of the key information from the talks that were given at Conference. Join Protect Piha Heritage for another popular talk, eat a meal of fish, chips and snarlers, sip a glass of wine, and hear Raewyn Paert talk about how development of many parts of our coast has transformed wild natural places into urbanised suburbs.The talk will be illustrated with many gorgeous photographs of the New Zealand coastline. Raewyn is an environmental lawyer, researcher and senior policy analyst for the Environmental Defence Society. If you haven?t visited this area for some time, you will be amazed at the changes. We have arranged for an outstanding group of expert leaders to talk to us about the flora and fauna of the area as we go.

Storyfest is a free annual storytelling event organised by Waitakere City Council for kids and their families at the Kelston Community Centre. In 2009 it will take place on Saturday 26 September and provides continuous entertainment and activities from 10am to 4pm.
The event has been running for 14 years and is an integral part of the Going West Books and Writers Festival. It hosts up to 3,000 children and their families for a day of storytelling, music, performance, workshops and more. Free entry - all welcome. Our Robin Kewell films and talks series continues with a visit to Ethiopia in ?Our Common Planet?. When you mention ?Ethiopia? most people thionk ?War? ?Starvation? and ?Desert? this film shows a more positive view of this troubled country featuring a film about the work of charity "Menshen fur Menshen" ( Manking for Mankind) based in Addis Ababa and founded by German film star, Karl Heinz Boehm, who gave up his film career to help the people of Ethiopia. The film will be accompanied by excerpts from Robin's diaries and some of the stories from behind the camera. Produced by the late Mohamed Amin. Narration by the award winning Barry Paine. 11th - 13th Sep: Going West Books And Writers Festival 2009 The literary weekend is the main highlight of Going West Books and Writers Festival and takes place from 11-13 September at the Titirangi War Memorial Hall.The weekend begins on Friday night at 6.30pm and this year's keynote speaker is writer, comedian, amateur historian and raconteur Te Radar who is sure to be entertaining and enlightening. Also on Friday night, Going West Books and Writers Festival is proud to present the world premiere of North:South - inspired by Glenn Colquhoun's epic poetry cycle of the same name, where the gods and goddesses of Maori and Celtic mythology meet, clash and fall in love. Activities will include: weaving, pottery, sculpture, costume making, jewellery design, painting and drum making, all from recycled and found materials. This annual free day out provides a great opportunity for children and their parents and/or caregivers to get creative together. A group of young surfers from Australia and South Africa sacrificed everything and put it all on the line to create a sport, a culture, and an industry that is today worth billions of dollars and has captured the imagination of the world. With a radical new approach and a brash colonial attitude, these surfers crashed headlong into a culture that was not ready for revolution. Surfing was never to be the same again.
