To help fund this years Huntington Exchange, Piha SLSC is holding an auction at the end of April. There are some fantastic items up for grabs as well as some delicious nibbles - and the first glass is complimentary.

Join us on the Top Floor of Lopdell House for the second of our regular evenings of words and music with some of New Zealand's best poets and local  musicians. This month we feature musicians Mandy Patmore and Stan Woodhouse and poets Jane Griffin,  Doug Poole, Judith McNeil and Jason Morales.  Entry $15 or $10 for Friends of Lopdell House Gallery.  Booking is advised, phone 8178087 x 201 or call int the gallery shop.

 


22nd April 3pm : Celebrate the Waitakere Way and the Best of the West

  Public Rally and show of community spirit

Gather at Corban Estate Art Centre, from 3pm, for a march down to Waitakere City Council. This will be a celebration of the Waitakere Way, of the Best of the West, and a chance for the community to strongly and loudly voice their opposition to Government?s abuse of the democratic process, and the loss of Waitakere?s identity within the proposed supercity.  There will be local artists and entertainers alongside us, details still to be finalized.


19th April 2pm Artist's Talk by Anthony Davies @ Lopdell House Titirangi

Printmaker Anthony Davies will discuss the works in his exhibition Ten Years After: 1997-2007 currently on show in the main gallery at 2pm.

18th April 7:30pm Barnet Hall: Seminar about the ecology of kauri and kauri die-back disease with Dr Bruce Burns and Dr Nick Waipara. Presented by Protect Piha Heritage.

Dr Bruce Burns is a recently appointed lecturer in plant ecology at the University of Auckland.  He was born in Auckland and has been interested in kauri all his life, publishing on its ecology and the vegetation of kauri forest at Waipoua.

Dr Nick Waipara is a biosecurity researcher and planner with Auckland Regional Council.  He is an environmental microbiologist, previously working over the past 12 years for three Crown Research Institutes, Landcare Research, HortResearch and AgResearch.

4th Apr 7:30pm: Film Night - Encore Screening of Rubbings from a Live Man

"Rubbings from a Live Man is listed as one of the top five documentaries of the year from around the world" NZ Herald Time Out Guide

In Rubbings from a Live Man, director Florian Habicht crafts together a flamboyant, tour-de-force exploration of the life and times of the incomparable Warwick Broadhead. Broadhead's career as a performing artists and director has spanned four decades.

In this hybrid documentary Broadhead re-enacts the highest and lowest points of his life through various alter-egos and vignettes that lavish his story upon the screen. Through it all Habicht searches for the soul of his subject and explores the cultures that forged him.


4th Apr 10am - 2pm: Car Boot Sale @ Piha Domain.  Fundraiser for Piha Community Library and Piha Kids Charitable Trust (PKTC).  Yummy food, lots of stalls, toys and books. To book a stall please phone Marilyn 8128 799.  $20 a stall.  Donations of toys and books gratefully accepted. Please bring them down to PKCT stall on the day.  Car Boot Sales on the Domain are always great fun so see you there.

13 - 14th: Pasifika Festival - Western Springs
Pasifika Festival takes place March every year. It is one of the largest community events in the South Pacific. It is recognised as an important celebration of the art, culture and lifestyle of Pacific Islands communities of Auckland.
 

14th Mar: Volcom Stones Surf Tour Qualifier @ Piha
Volcom Stone's VQS Fishfinger surf contest is the second event of the 2008/2009 tour, it is a one day event which will be held Saturday 14th March, Piha Beach, Auckland NZ Registration is at 7am and we will be kicking off with the 14 & Under Groms division  at 7:30am. Entry in all divisions are limited and filled on a first come first serve basis, early bird catches the worm.   Full details here on surf2surf
 
 

14th Mar: Art on the Beach @ Piha by Lopdell House

Art on the Beach 2009 will feature a spectacular laser light display at iconic Lion Rock, Piha. The event will also incorporate a musical lantern performance on Piha Beach beginning at 7.45pm.

In the coming weeks Lopdell House Gallery and the West Coast Gallery in Piha will be offering lantern making workshops. Why not come along and take part in what will be an amazing light spectacle.

This event is made possible with the support of the Lion Foundation and Treescape.

Again Black Sands Lodge is proud to have their garden in the Heroic Gardens Tour 2009.

Lopdell House Studio will be open as part of Waitakere City's Open Studio Weekend celebrating the diverse arts community that we have in West Auckland.  Come along and make a fish lantern that will glow in the dark and be a part of our Art on the Beach event on Saturday 14 March at Piha Beach.

FEB: Bike Wise Month:  There's no better time to dust off the bike and start pedalling around the region than Bike Wise Month.

Bike Wise encourages people to enjoy the summer weather by getting out and about on their bikes. It aims to increase participation in cycling and promote safety.

This year Bike Wise has been extended to a month, running from 1 to 28 February. Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and local councils are working together to provide a packed programme of cycling events.

The Helensville A&P Association held it's first Show in 1900 - and barring two occasions it's been held every year since. The Helensville Show is easily the biggest event on Helensville's annual calendar.
 
 

28th Feb: Thundercats at North Piha Beach.
 
The Thundercats Association are planning Round 6 of their national series at North Piha.  For those that went down to watch last February I'm sure you'll agree what a great day it was and especially for the kids.

Summerslamz, a celebration of all things to do with youth of the city.

That's right Auckland's biggest free Skate and BMX comp is back again in 2009. It's all about having a go, so no matter how old you are come down and show us your moves.

Those who came last year will remember the transformation of the park, with marquees, tables, chairs, white table clothes and huge purple and green flags flying in the wind. This year will be ever bigger and better. Come prepared with your own picnic and favourite drink (don't forget you can't buy wine or beer in supermarkets out west). This year we have Silvana Sylvestro selling her special Italian treats. Silvana is well known in Matakana for her high quality authentic fare and we are delighted she has agreed to have a stall at Heroes Out West.

The musical line up is strong with a definite lesbian flavour - The Muse, Edwina and Marilyn, Paua Fritters, Razor and a special tribute to Mahinarangi Tocker. Anne Spier is MCing the evening - injecting her wonderful sense of humour through-out.  more info here

We are most privileged to be hosting Len Castle's nationally touring exhibition, Mountain to the Sea. Len has crafted new works to add to his classic collection of earth inspired unique ceramics. Make a note in your diaries, you won't want to miss this landmark show of Titirangi's much loved and respected living treasure.
The opening will be followed by supper on the top floor of Lopdell House with Len Castle, why not join us?  We'll also be entertained by poets Jack Ross and Reimke Ensing.

Places are limited and we recommend you book early to secure your seat, phone 817 8087 x201 ($30 per head).

Places filling up fast - some classes are almost booked out. Hurry and book now!Corban Estate Arts Centre presents a week long programme of inspiring workshops led by an exciting line up of well known contemporary New Zealand artists. The Summer School engages participants in exploration, pushing boundaries and having fun in the creative field.
In addition to the formal programme (details of each course follow) there will be an informal -tutor showcase presented by participating tutors.

10 - 17th Jan: Hyundai National Champs - Piha Beach
 
The 2009 Hyundai National Surfing Championships presented by Quiksilver will be staged at Piha Beach, Auckland this January (10th - 17th).  It is 35 years since the event was first staged at Piha in 1974.  The Hyundai National Championships presented by Quiksilver is widely regarded as the most prestigious event in New Zealand with a proud 46 year history. . . . .

 5th & 7th Jan 8 - 10pm : Bat Walks: Waitakere @  Car park at the end of Falls Rd through the Waitakere Golf Course. Bat walks Cascade Kauri Waitakere Ranges.  The initial part of the evening will be spent learning about the interesting ecology of these secretive creatures and hopefully spotting them as dusk approaches.  Once it's dark, we will then head off for a walk along a bush track to look at other nocturnal creatures who inhabit the bush and stream.  More details on Bat Walks on ARC website here

2nd Jan: Piha SLSC Piha will be host to Double Trouble - featuring our very own George Thomson! Entry is $5 on the door and non-members must be accompanied by a Piha SLSC member.
