The Huntington Exchange provides our young Piha lifeguards with an invaluable learning experience, the benefits of which are returned to the club in spades. Join us on the Top Floor of Lopdell House for the second of our regular evenings of words and music with some of New Zealand's best poets and local musicians. 22nd April 3pm : Celebrate the Waitakere Way and the Best of the West Public Rally and show of community spirit 
Gather at Corban Estate Art Centre, from 3pm, for a march down to Waitakere City Council. This will be a celebration of the Waitakere Way, of the Best of the West, and a chance for the community to strongly and loudly voice their opposition to Government?s abuse of the democratic process, and the loss of Waitakere?s identity within the proposed supercity. There will be local artists and entertainers alongside us, details still to be finalized. 19th April 2pm Artist's Talk by Anthony Davies @ Lopdell House Titirangi Printmaker Anthony Davies will discuss the works in his exhibition Ten Years After: 1997-2007 currently on show in the main gallery at 2pm.
Free entry. Details and contact for Anthony Davies here 18th April 7:30pm Barnet Hall: Seminar about the ecology of kauri and kauri die-back disease with Dr Bruce Burns and Dr Nick Waipara. Presented by Protect Piha Heritage. Dr Bruce Burns is a recently appointed lecturer in plant ecology at the University of Auckland. He was born in Auckland and has been interested in kauri all his life, publishing on its ecology and the vegetation of kauri forest at Waipoua. Dr Nick Waipara is a biosecurity researcher and planner with Auckland Regional Council. He is an environmental microbiologist, previously working over the past 12 years for three Crown Research Institutes, Landcare Research, HortResearch and AgResearch. 4th Apr 7:30pm: Film Night - Encore Screening of Rubbings from a Live Man "Rubbings from a Live Man is listed as one of the top five documentaries of the year from around the world" NZ Herald Time Out Guide
In Rubbings from a Live Man, director Florian Habicht crafts together a flamboyant, tour-de-force exploration of the life and times of the incomparable Warwick Broadhead. Broadhead's career as a performing artists and director has spanned four decades.
In this hybrid documentary Broadhead re-enacts the highest and lowest points of his life through various alter-egos and vignettes that lavish his story upon the screen. Through it all Habicht searches for the soul of his subject and explores the cultures that forged him.

13 - 14th: Pasifika Festival - Western Springs Pasifika Festival takes place March every year. It is one of the largest community events in the South Pacific. It is recognised as an important celebration of the art, culture and lifestyle of Pacific Islands communities of Auckland.
14th Mar: Volcom Stones Surf Tour Qualifier @ Piha Volcom Stone's VQS Fishfinger surf contest is the second event of the 2008/2009 tour, it is a one day event which will be held Saturday 14th March, Piha Beach, Auckland NZ Registration is at 7am and we will be kicking off with the 14 & Under Groms division at 7:30am. 14th Mar: Art on the Beach @ Piha by Lopdell House
Art on the Beach 2009 will feature a spectacular laser light display at iconic Lion Rock, Piha. The event will also incorporate a musical lantern performance on Piha Beach beginning at 7.45pm.
In the coming weeks Lopdell House Gallery and the West Coast Gallery in Piha will be offering lantern making workshops. Why not come along and take part in what will be an amazing light spectacle. This event is made possible with the support of the Lion Foundation and Treescape.

We're looking forward to meeting new guests and welcoming back those that came in 08. FEB: Bike Wise Month: There's no better time to dust off the bike and start pedalling around the region than Bike Wise Month.
Bike Wise encourages people to enjoy the summer weather by getting out and about on their bikes. It aims to increase participation in cycling and promote safety.
This year Bike Wise has been extended to a month, running from 1 to 28 February. Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and local councils are working together to provide a packed programme of cycling events. Bikewise here

Paintings and ceramics. Zeke is a west coast icon - his work always surprises, disturbs and delights. West Coast Gallery - Piha 29th Feb 9am-4:30: Helensville A&P Show The Helensville A&P Association held it's first Show in 1900 - and barring two occasions it's been held every year since. The Helensville Show is easily the biggest event on Helensville's annual calendar.

The Thundercats Association are planning Round 6 of their national series at North Piha. For those that went down to watch last February I'm sure you'll agree what a great day it was and especially for the kids.

This year we have Silvana Sylvestro selling her special Italian treats. Silvana is well known in Matakana for her high quality authentic fare and we are delighted she has agreed to have a stall at Heroes Out West. The musical line up is strong with a definite lesbian flavour - The Muse, Edwina and Marilyn, Paua Fritters, Razor and a special tribute to Mahinarangi Tocker. 5th & 7th Jan 8 - 10pm : Bat Walks: Waitakere @ Car park at the end of Falls Rd through the Waitakere Golf Course. Bat walks Cascade Kauri Waitakere Ranges. The initial part of the evening will be spent learning about the interesting ecology of these secretive creatures and hopefully spotting them as dusk approaches. Once it's dark, we will then head off for a walk along a bush track to look at other nocturnal creatures who inhabit the bush and stream.
