Waitakere : Our City
Waitakere City has a population of 187,000 spread over a land area of 367sq km. People that live in Waitakere are affectionately called 'Westies' by other Aucklanders. Waitakere is the home of the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area.


We have slightly more females than males and 24% are under 14 years of age.
Our population is made up of 53% European, 12% NZ Maori, 14% Pacific Island, 15% are Asian and the balance 6% are 'other'.
The largest grouping of people earn between $30-50,000 (more than the NZ average) and we spend more than the average NZer and there are approximately 13,000 businesses in Waitakere.

Westie" is the nickname given to locals because of the Waitakere's location relative to the rest of Auckland. The stereotypical "Westie" wears a black t-shirt, black jeans, drives a eight-cylinder car , like's heavy metal and drinks Lion Red beer.
In fact such is the hold that the Westie image has on the rest of New Zealand that there is now a TV series, called Outrageous Fortune, that chronicles the life and dramas of a Westie family.
