Piha Beach -  'Village Voice'

This is the site for Piha Village Voice Archives April 2008 and prior

Piha News & Views:  Left: Village Voice Editor - Bobbie  a few years ago!

THIS IS A VILLAGE VOICE ARCHIVE.  TO GO TO THE CURRENT VILLAGE VOICE

5/4/08 Protect Piha Heritage has applied to the Ministry for the Environment for a grant of up to $30,000 (of taxpayers money) to fight the ARC & WCC (ratepayers money) in the Environmental Court !

5/4/08
WCC/Piha Coastcare Beach Valley Rd Project got off to a fabulous start today.  The photo on the left was when we took a lunch and coffee break.

We had great fun plus a lot of hard work was done.  It was especially great chatting to all those that stopped for a chat and a big thanks to Peter for dropping off the Sunday Star Times for me and of course WCC's support.

24/4/08 Do you run a business from Piha?  We are looking at starting a Piha Business Association to look after our interests and ensure we are represented locally and with Council.  If you are interested please Email me here

Which do you prefer?

Have you seen these around Waitakere?  Its a joint venture, I understand, between Corbans Art (or WCC) and Vector.  Great way of hiding something ugly and supporting local artists.

I think they are fabulous and I am assured that if the transformers were painted in Piha that we wouldn't have white seagulls etc but rather something that blended in really nicely.

Imagine the one on Seaview Road, below right, with manuka and flax painted on it with maybe a blackbird?

Seems also that this fabulous art is reducing the graffitee considerably.  Something about a code of ethics between artists - that's kinda nice.  Which do you prefer? HERE

Tsunami Warning April 27th:  Could you hear it?

29/4/08

A huge thank you (I think?) to the Village Voice fan who went out and bought this 'Reporter's' hat for me.  I love it.

This very same person will sometimes ring me to give  'tip offs' to go and photograph or report on 'What's Happening' etc in Piha.  Thanks - I'll wear with fondness.

You too can give me tips by text on 021 969924

28/4/08 Waitakere City Council: Audit of Septic Tanks: A letter to Ecowater

Dear John Mackenzie,

Thank you for your letter regarding the audit of Septic Tanks on the property of 9 Sylvan Glade, Piha.

To recap: you say that you have not being charging us for the emptying of our septic tanks with our WCC Rates for a long time.  Further, that you have audited our said property and you find that not only do we not have '0' septic tanks but rather, horror, we have '2'.

I think you should obtain a refund from whoever performed this audit.  You see, we have a nice new modern septic system that is under contract and the Council has this on record so we don't pay you to empy our septic as we pay a private company.

I am not sure where your 'auditors' found '2' on our property?  We, along with many other Piha Ratepayers, are puzzled where all these septics suddenly arrived from.

Please do NOT add sewage charges to our WCC rates and do get that 'auditors charges' refunded - money is precious these days.

Oh, and while we're corresponding, you might like to send your contractors back to our home at 54 Beach Valley Road and ask them to seal the septic tank which they forgot to do after the last emptying?

Regards as always:  Bobbie Carroll

PS: By the way the email that you put in the letter, for us to contact you, keeps bouncing back.  Are you sure it was the right one?  ecowatercs@waitakere.govt.nz

IF anyone wishes to contact EcoWater about this just Email John Mackenzie, Ecowater, HERE .

25/4/08 Anzac in Piha Beach
Every year there a fewer service men and woman at the Anzac Commemorations but the crowds get bigger.

This photo was taken of the crowd pouring down to the base of Lion Rock, where the two Rolls of Honour are, for the Anzac Service.  On the left is Camel Rock.

It is still the best Anzac commemoration I have ever been too.

More photos on their way . . . .

25/4/08 Imagine, if you will, you own a food business in Piha that has been operating for 20+ years.  Now imagine that a not insignificant amount of your business comes from people that get to you by a bridge over a lagoon from the Domain where they are directed to park their car.

Now imagine that this bridge has been removed and won't be replaced for four months.  No problems except this is where a lot of your trade comes from.

Now imagine being told by the Council (in response to a complaint) that you have to pay $1,500 +gst for Resource Consent, plus another $400 +gst for monitoring, to display the sign on the left to let people that drive down Beach Valley Road know that "if you go this way you can get hot food".

So not only has at least 50% of your business dissappeared overnight - no bridge - but you are supposed to be able to cough up over $2,000 to advertise on a sandwich board so you can try to make some kind of living or maybe just cover your operating expenses including employing locals.

Life is getting a little tough by now uh!  No doubt the unemployment queue could possibly look a teeny weeny bit attractive?  It's not incredibly easy for self employed people with a shrinking economy without these added obstacles getting in the way.

Could someone introduce a little bit of common sense, not to mention decency, and let people make a dollar or two without battling idiotic beaurocracy and tax collecting - please ? .............  Good luck to you Blair and Adrian.
24/4/08 Piha and United North Piha Lifeguards were today awarded the Surf Life Saving New Zealand Rescue of the Month for the incident that occurred on 22nd March 08.

Below is a photo of the man who almost lost his life and the two family members who with the help of an off-duty Police Officer helped him to shore.

A great outcome and demonstration of teamwork between our two Surf Clubs, SurfCom, Piha/Karekare First Response, St John Ambulance and the Northern Rescue Helicopter crews.

24/4/08
President Bush's last day, left, on a visiting American's hat.

I so enjoyed it and thought you might too.

Waitakere City Council and Piha Coastcare have lately been discussing a pilot project to trial a neighbourhood approach, as many people have highlighted how weeds coming from their neighbours, including sometimes Council land, makes the task harder.  We are therefore asking the question: 'Is it possible to work with all the neighbours in an area to get the best result, and what would it take for this to happen?'

The new Beach Valley Road project is being coordinated by Bobbie Carroll (8128 758) and the Glen Esk Road project is being led by Yvonne Cleverley (8128 381 or 817 3342).  If you live in one of these areas and would like to join in, feel free to contact these coordinators.

Both areas are launching their programmes on Sunday May 4th , with local weed bins in place the previous Friday, and the working bee on  Sunday, starting at 10am. Contact the coordintors above for details.

Garden Road residents are continuing with their weedfree programme, and several residents have already requested plants for this season.

Both of the new initiatives have been greatly enhanced with the appointment by WCC of Chrissy Henley to assist us, as part of a pilot programme to increase the effectiveness of Council?s current Community Assistance Programme, and to fulfil their undertakings under the Waitakere Ranges Heritage legislation to support communities in their environmental projects.

A mail drop in Beach Valley Road will explain more and we'd love to welcome anyone on board.  email here for more info or to just join in

YOUR WEEDS:
If you wish to access free plants to put in where you have eliminated invasive weeds (eg Wandering Jew, Agapanthus, Cape Ivy, Ginger, Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Climbing Asparagus, Climbing Dock, Watsonia, Montbretia) you will need to get onto your weed eradication programme as soon as possible.  Best results will be achieved if the invasive weeds are completely under control before you put in replacement plants.  For advice on getting rid of your weeds, you can contact WCC via the Call centre (839 0400) or the Coastcare Coordinator (8128 202 or EMAIL tuivale@pl.net).  You can access free replacement plants from the same sources.

ANZAC DAY - Lest we Forget    This is a scam - I apologise.  Here is the scam: Holocaust Rumour;
It is a matter of history that when Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps, he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect:
'Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the track of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened.   All that is necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing?.

This week, the
University of Kentucky removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offended' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred.

The person that sent this to me knows who you are ..... tut tut and silly me!

21/4/08:  Good thing the drought is over with a 3 HECTARE FIRE IN ANAWHATA which started late yesterday afternoon.  Brigades from Piha, Bethells, Waiatarua and surrounds are all helping out:  good on you guys; mostly volunteers.  Hope you're OK over there Glenys and Rusty?

20/4/08 Wood Pigeons (Kereru) in Piha

On Sunday 20th April two Kereru, or Wood Pigeons, sat in our front pohutukawa tree for some time - as peaceful as could be.

They then flew over to the Cabbage Tree (left) and sat there for a while.

We are so thrilled to have Kereru back in this pohutukawa as we had a pair there regularly up to 1999 but found one dead when came back from USA and didn't see the other again.

We have quite a few in our back bush but to have Kereru in the front pohutukawa is an absolute treat.

Five tips for a woman....

1. It is important that a man helps you around the house and has a job.
2. It is important that a man makes you laugh.

3. It is important to find a man you can count on! and doesn't lie to you.
4. It is important that a man loves you and spoils you.
5. It is important that these four men don't know each other.

29/11/07  NZ Herald Article: 'Unhappy camper says Piha cafe would add to noise'  Yes, you guessed it - the unhappy camper is Big Wave owner Fiona Anderson. "Campers say 'we've come here for peace and quiet'."  Read it HERE !!!
8/4/08 BREAKING PIHA NEWS:  The new Big Wave Cafe, opened by Protect Piha Heritage member Fiona Anderson,  has been closed down by Waitakere City Council until the Manager can prove to them she has the right to operate such an operation.
Read what the NZHerald readers think about the Big Wave and A Cafe in Piha  HERE
8/4/08 Cafe in Piha:  It's incredible that laws in this country supposedly allow a mobile cafe to operate in the Piha Campgrounds without anything more than a health certificate while the young men who are trying to renovate a derelict building for a cafe have had to spend well over $100k to end up in the Environment Court.

What is going on in this country?  The whole thing is a joke, albeit an expensive one for the boys and now for the ratepayers of the ARC and the Waitakere City Council who are having to justify in court why their experts approved the renovation of the old telephone exchange for a cafe.

Protect Piha Heritage, of which Fiona is a founding member, thinks there are enough club cafes in Piha and another cafe is not needed. The camp sewerage system is hardly able to keep up, but the proposed new cafe will have the best system available and Potect Piha Heritage thinks that's not good enough. Strange? Double standards if you ask me. Come on NZ, get it right.  Julia Woodhouse, Piha Resident

Herald Article on Big Wave Cafe

No roadside advertising - Fiona what's this?

Letter to Wayne Thompson, NZ Herald:  We have over 500 signatures from locals FOR the Cafe (which is in the court process - not this Big Wave thing) .... shame no article can ever mention that?  NZ is going to the dogs.  No wonder so many of our gorgeous young people are leaving.  ARC gives  the big run around to Cam,  AWOL Adventures ,  owner, who is the most stunning guy doing what he loves, tourists love and we love him and doesn't hurt a ground flea doing it.  It's appalling - the whole thing.  Something has to change else NZ will have no one left with any get up and go.  Bobbie Carroll - Piha and editor of Piha Village Voice

6/6/08  New Cafe in Piha opened this weekend:

The Big Wave Cafe

Location: Piha Domain Camp

Yes, Protect Piha Heritage Inc foundation member, Fiona Anderson has opened her own Big Wave Cafe in the Piha Domain.   Oh, dear dear Fiona . . . . what can I say?

Next to each photo below is a quote from Fiona's evidence given against the proposed Cafe, on the old Post Office site, at the recent joint ARC/WCC resource consent hearings.

These photos below are of the new Big Wave Cafe in the Piha Domain as photographed this week.

"I know that my customers at the Camp primarily come to be in a quiet and natural environment away from the trapping of city life"

"I am very concerned at the effect building this Cafe would have not just on the campers but also on me as an immediate neighbour ............  I am worried this will create a precedent"

"The cafe will just make Piha less unique, less restful, more traffic, more noise, little or no benefit to few campers etc"

Below: A conveyer Pizza oven in the Big Wave Cafe -  "Piha is well served by licensed outlets, the rest of the Community are happy with what we have and don't consider themselves too 'High End' to meet at the RSA, Surf Club or Bowling Club"

"Why on earth would you go to a 'High End Cafe' for a takeaway?  You can get that at The Store or Blairs"

"I request that both WCC & ARC decline this application in full and thank you for your time

Fiona:  I think this gives you little choice but to join the 'YES' campaign if you don't want egg (uh coffee) on your face  . . . .

The 'Yes!' Campaign is a group of 9 people in Piha in support of the Cafe in Piha, on the old Post Office site bought by Preserve Piha Ltd and granted resource consent by WCC and ARC.  This consent is being challenged in the environement court by Protect Piha Heritage.  If you wish to contact the 'Yes' campaign Email HERE

A bit of advice for you Fiona:

When you're in 'Deep Shit' . . . . . .

Keep your mouth shut, your head down and look straight ahead!

ANZAC DAY - Piha Community Library:

We, at the library, are preparing for our annual "ANZAC MEMORIAL" display at the Piha Library. This display has been very successful in the past, it does not glorify war but pays tribute to the men and women of the Anzac forces, Medicos, Home Guard and Work Forces who all did their bit in those times.

To keep it interesting we are always looking for new items of interest, eg:- Uniforms,or parts of. Medals.Flags & Ensigns. Call up and discharge papers.Wills.  Letters home. Photos. That dreadful telegram. Documents of value can be photocopied for display in order to preserve the original.  If you have a photo of a family member who is/was an ANZAC we would like to display it on a Wall of Honour.

We would also like to display any photos or items of interest relating to our area at that time, eg:- Old photos of family or club gatherings.

If you can help with our display please call into the library -  Tue, Wed & Thu 10-1pm and Sat 10-3pm

April 08

The old footbridge over Piha Lagoon is gone now.

Piha Lagoon Water Quality:  Great to hear that the Piha Surf Club, Piha Bowling Club and Piha RSA are talking with WCC watercare and the R & R about achieving a solution to the pollution in the Piha Lagoon.  Next month they will inch along to some costings.   Maybe this decade it'll be fixed - not before time
30/3/08    DO AS I SAY- NOT AS I DO HERE
4/4/08 PIHA POST OFFICE:

In May 2005 a Public Meeting was held at Barnett Hall, Piha, to hear and question John Goulter, of Telecom, about the status of the Piha Post Office.   Telecom had made the decision to sell the property that the Piha Post Office operated from.

Two remits were passed at this meeting (I counted approx 80 - 90 people there) according to the Piha Ratepayers and Residents Winter Newsletter 2005.

  1. That this meeting requests that the R and R executive continues to advocate that the Piha Post Office remain on the existing site and that the R & R enter into negotiations with Telecom, NZ Post and WCC to achieve that end.
  2. That this meeting resolves that the WCC be asked to be part of negotiations with a view to acquisition of the land to continue the Piha Post Office on the existing site.

Clearly both of the above are impossible now as the property has been sold by Telecom and is now owned by Preserve Piha Ltd.

At the 2007 R&R AGM Tony Dunn (President) told the meeting he had had a preliminary meeting with WCC to look at resource concent to move the Post Office building onto the Piha Store's land.

The estimated cost to move the Post Office onto the Store's property is $16,000 plus another $8,000 for resource consent.  When questioned about this Tony told the meeting he was working under the authority of  "the mandate given to him to save the Post Office".  He couldn't specify the meeting nor quote the mandate at the time.

I have been asking for a copy of this 'mandate'  for many months now and finally have been given a copy of the R&R Winter Newsletter 05 which reports on this public meeting and quotes the above resolutions.

Now, I don't use the Post Office.  I don't agree with the sentiments of others that it is a 'life line' in Piha.  If you want a private box, fair enough, but we don't have to have a Post Office open 2 hours on Tuesday and Thursdays and another 2 hours Saturdays so people can have a private P.O. Box.   BUT, all this aside, I have two problems here:

  1. No resolution at a Public Meeting authorises anyone to spend any of the Ratepayers and Residents money - end of story, full stop.  Only a duly called for meeting of the R & R members can do this.
  2. I do not agree with spending $16,000+ of R & R's limited funds on a Post Office rarely open when what is needed, it seems, is private boxes.  The Store can sell stamps.

What do you think?

Should the R & R spend $16,000 on moving the Post Office?

Is there something else you would rather see $16,000 spent on?

Let us know your thoughts HERE

(RE: Never Argue with a Woman):

I think you forgot to mention the Game Warden missed the obvious.   The book the husband had GIVEN to his wife on her birthday was Sea Perch by John Dory and incidently was being read upside down with a hook marking the page.

Never argue with a woman in a boat. It's likely she can sink.
Mark the Bounder
4/4/08 Speedster on Piha Road    We live up the top of Piha Road not far from the Karekare turn off.  Tonight we had a repeat of what we had to put up with during the summer.  We had some idiot in a red corvette or E type Jag doing what is rumoured to be time trials between Karekare Road and Te Ahuahu Road, back and forth for up to 30 minutes at a time, at well in excess of (probably double) the 70 kph speed limit.

The number plate is DUNTOY, or at least I think it was, he was going so flipping fast!  I went down with my camera to get a photo of him tonight, but Murphy's law he didn't come back past us again.  We are FED UP with this completely reckless, dangerous, illegal, noisy and selfish activity.  The person driving the car wears a crash helmet - well lucky him - what about all the innocent people who could get run over, killed, seriously injured?  There are heaps of families around us with small children - it's just TOO dangerous.

Regards  Sarah Boyce

It's a worry for sure Sarah.  My suggestion is to get your mobile and dial *555 and report it immediately.  One great thing about Piha is there is one road in and one out.  We have had success recently having police come to boy racers recently.  Good Luck  Bobbie

Never Argue with a Woman

One morning the husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap.  Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book.

Along comes a Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'

'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')  'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading'  'Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any  moment.  I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'For reading a book,' she replies,  'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her again,

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading'  'Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any  moment.  I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with Sexual assault,'  says the  woman.  'But I haven't even touched you,' says the game warden.

'That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.'

'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.

MORAL: Never argue with a woman who reads. It's likely she can also think.

Regarding the Non-fatal Drowning on 22nd March

On Tuesday 25th this man was discharged from Auckland City Hospital having made a full recovery with no physical/brain injury as a result of his ordeal. A great result and well done to the Piha and United Lifeguards, Piha-Karekare First Response and St John Ambulance who all worked together in the treatment and medivac of this patient to hospital.

As a post-script, we had to fight mostly Piha locals to get the beach safety signage up in the first place. It took a directive from the Coroner who was sick of the number of people dying on this beach. Anti-cafe vandals please leave these and all safety signs alone. You are entitled to your view; you are NOT entitled to endanger the health and safety of others!     Jonathon

April 08 NEW ZEALAND GARDENER:  Pete Joyce and Shelley France have transformed a steep, wind-swept, gorse-strewn section overlooking the black sands of Piha beach into a special - and satisfying - hillside haven.

This photo of mine is not well focused and just a tease to Gil's photos.

1/4/0/08  Piha School Bus hits bus stop shelter with young student in it:

When the bus hit this  shelter it knocked it right off its footings - lucky it came back down where it was as a young student was in the shelter at the time.

We don't know who the student was but we sure hope you're OK.

Again:I have to ask if its safe for the school bus stop to be in front of 3 drive ways next to the Piha Store?

Rachel Hunter at Piha.

I was just strolling down to the beach and this 4WD passed and I was sure it was Rachel driving.  The 4wd drove down the end of South Piha and back and I called out 'Hi Rachel' and she responded - Yes!

She is so neat is Our Rachel.  I asked if I could take this photo and her

You idiots; irresponsible idiots:  Not only do you deface the 'Danger, swim between the flags sign' but also the 'caution on corner signs'.  How would you feel if this was your car, or your family was in it or even if you family was in a car underneath this one.

I hope you are found out and given 15 hours a weekend, for a year,  digging gorse out of the Waitakere Ranges with NO gloves.

23/3/08 Hi Bobbie

Last night there was a drowning on North Piha Beach. A young man was flown to Auckland hospital in a critical condition. The family involved in the incident (2 of which also almost drowned) and originally from Sri Lanka were not regular visitors to Piha.

I just want to say a special thank you to the mindless anti-cafe supporters who in championing the cause of their own self interests have seen fit to vandalise the beach safety sign at the Karekare turn off by spraying "NO CAFE" all over it, to the point it can no longer be read.

Not everyone knows how dangerous Piha is, not all of you know this beach has the highest drowning toll of any beach in New Zealand, but to those of you responsible for the graffiti you should be ashamed of yourselves for (a) defacing public property rather than protesting through other socially accepted means and (b) FOR ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF VISITORS TO THIS BEACH!!!

Thanks,  Jonathon Webber, Senior Lifeguard, Piha

(24th Mar: As of today this gentleman is still on a ventilator in critical care.)

Jonathon, Driving home from the city today I saw all this disgusting vandalism.  I stopped to photograph it and then received your email when I got home - how timely.

It appauls me that the Cafe opposition choose to get their point across on road and beach safety signs.  It leaves me speechess. Regards Bobbie.    Below are the photos taken today

From NZ Herald 24/3/08:

But there was none of the high drama seen at Piha on Saturday, when a 28-year-old Henderson man of Sri Lankan descent was flown by helicopter to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition after being swept more than 500m along the beach north of Lion Rock.

Two male relatives managed to support the man's head above the water until the trio landed on a sand bar and were helped ashore by an off-duty police officer, said senior lifesaver Jonathon Webber, who helped to stabilise him while the Whangarei-based Northern rescue helicopter was called.

Garden Road Pond - Invitation Hello All:  As there has been a last minute change of plans for excavating the Garden Road Pond  Piha, Council Officers have invited Piha people  to a meeting at the Pond, next Tuesday (March 25th) at 5pm.

As this is the first opportunity we have had to participate in discussions of our aspiratons for the future of the Pond, I would urge you to take advantage of this opportunity if you can.

The background history of the Pond process, as I see it, is as follows:

Wendy and John Innes from Garden Road circulated a petition asking Council to restore open water for wildlife on the Garden Road Pond.

The overwhelmig result of this petition showed that Piha people wanted the open water restored.

Excavation of the pond legally required a Community Consultation to change the Reserve Management Plan.

Council consulted only with the R&R Committee and a small group of Garden Road residents.  No opportuinity was provided for input from the wider community.

Because of this, there are no clear plans for the long term future of the Pond.  Is it to continue to be dominated by the invasive lilies or is it to  be restored to a native environment?  The wider community has not been asked these questions.  Nor has it been given information on the ecological implications of these options.

The immediate problem to be resolved by Council is the methodology for the excavation process and disposal of the sludge from the excavation.  The sludge was to have gone into the old bed of the Marawhara Stream on Waygoods property in Marine Parade,  but it has been decided at the last moment that this is not a suitable site. Construction of two drainage tanks beside the pond to de-water the sludge, then trucking it over the hill is the latest proposal.

I hope you will be able to come to the meeting and take advantage of this opportunity to participate in the process.

Regards :  Pat La Roche  (Coordinator, Piha Coastcare)

Cafe in Piha Information Day, on site, Easter Saturday '08.  Easter Saturday Information Day about Cafe in Piha.  Fun, fun and more fun!!!

A couple of hundred + (lost count) adults many with their children and/or dogs came up to see the display of the Artists Impression of the new Piha Cafe slong with the display of architectural plans, and site and planting  plans that have been given resource consent from ARC & WCC.   It certainly corrected some of the misinformation put to the public through the media and opposition.

The 'YES!" Campaigners: Front: Yvonne du Fuer, Helen Duder and Easter Bunny  Back: Bobbie Carroll, Gabrielle Lancaster, Pat la Roche, Julia Woodhouse, Chris Fougere (one of the owners) and Marilyn Perko.  Missing from the photo but with us in spirit: Gillian Cotten and Norma Woodall.

We planned it to be an informative and fun day and that's what it turned out to be.  The organisers 'The Yes! Campaign 9' look forward to a Cafe in Piha where you can meet and mix with others in a happy and nurturing environment and in the mean time we enjoy

Below: This is what is was all about:  To show locals and visitors alike the Artist's impression, architectural plans, material schedule and planing plans for what is going to be a real asset to Piha - a friendly central cafe where we can meet and have fun.

Easter Bunny offers Piha local, Ruby, an Easter Egg on the Piha Cafe site - the kids just loved Easter Bunny.

We can all do with more fun every now and then.  We, the Yes! Campaign, so enjoy having fun.  Here, one of our number, had a great day .

Over 200 people came and were very interested (and surprised) to see the Cafe plans.  Many commented on how  beautiful the plans were and nothing like the media or opponents have portrayed the site will look like.

Christian Fougere, a co-owner, happy chats to visitors about the site and Cafe plans.

Below: Lots and lots of people wanted to sign our petition in favour of the Cafe.

Below: Locals in their numbers came just to chat and offer any assistance needed - heart warming really.

Below: Even some support from Piha Camp!  Thank Dave, great to see you.

Below: Chris, part owner, with a strong supporter of the Cafe.

Below: Easter Bunny came for the kids but Marilyn toasted heaps of Hot Cross Buns and the supporters loved them.

Below: Old Piha friends with differing opinions on where a Cafe in Piha should be have a catch up on site.

Thanks to everyone that came and took the opportunity to factually see what all the fuss is about.  Without a doubt the majority of people were pretty shocked when they saw the plans after hearing so many bad things.   Just about everyone agrees that  the plans for the cafe show it to be a low key, coastal, pleasing to the eye, asset to Piha and more than one said

'Bring it on!

Piha Domain Footbridge Replacement 2008

Wow!  This is what the new footbridge over the Piha Lagoon is going to look like.

But to get it the present bridge will be closed from April thru July 08.

Looks like prams will be able to pass each other and a nice spot in the middle there to stop and enjoy the view.  I hope its bike friendly.

16/3/08 I went down to the 'Piha Cafe' site today to mow the lawns ready for our Information Display on Easter Saturday.  As I was mowing the lawns I got to thinking how neat it will be when that site has a Cafe on it.

Then the strangest thing happened : the motor mower stopped and I turned around to see how much more I had to do when I saw this  .......... !!!

Information Day Easter Saturday on site 10am - 1pm

See Artists Impression, architectural drawing etc - these are the FACTS

To whoever mowed the 'YES' off the above lawn:

  1. You were tresspassing and
  2. Could you mow them every week please?

I caught this photo a couple of days ago - its wonderful to see people not scared to swim or paddle the lagoon.

It's not polluted See Water quality testing results HERE

What do you do for a kitchen when your home is gong through major renovations?

Have an outside kitchen - here is how Pat is cooking and entertaining while her Piha home is going through some pretty amazing renovations.

Has anyone ever wondered why The Piha Mill is remembered and celebrated with such warmth when it was responsible for the anialation of the once fabulous Kauri Forests in Waitakere?

14/3/08 New Life for Piha's old school:

Desolate Piha School will again be filled with the clatter of children.

The weatherboard structure last used as a school, in PIha, in 1961, will be revamped as an information hut where students and community groups can study the Piha coast, wetlands, flora and fauna.

Education consultants, Leading Edge Services, and West Auckland primary, internediate and high school representatives are behind the transformation of the 2.8ha Seaview Rd site.

The cluster hopes to bring an environmental field studies group, Kuaka NZ, on board to work with ratepayer and

community groups on restoring the overgrown block.

To the people who insist there is no such place as  "South Piha Beach"  please have that argument with WCC - see photo left!

13/3/08:  All the very best to CASEY REDMOND (24) who is playing in the  NZ Ice Hockey Team at the World Champs in Rumania!   Give it heaps Casey.

Now come on you Roaring 40's Organisers . . . . .

You know that signage has been outlawed in Piha.

Seems it doesn't matter that visitors don't know where you are or we are or anything else for that matter.  NO signs.  You're risking $300 fine!

Why would you have a Bus Stop over three drive ways?

Why would you have a Bus Stop when there is NO bus service in Piha or is it for the School Bus?

Given the recent concerns about the traffic and parking problems in the 'hub' of Piha is this not a silly place for a Bus Stop anyway?

Ever wondered how quickly I can update our website?  Some think its because I am a genius but in fact its because I use a fabulous piece of software by our web host company.  This company is called  AboutIt (owned by local Piha Ratepayers) and I have been a customer of their for years now.  I thoroughly recomment them.  See the product  here:  AboutIt - web hosting with great user friendly software

Obituary: Common Sense

My parents told me about Mr. Common Sense early in my life and told me I would do well to call on him when making decisions. It seems he was always around in my early years but less and less as time passed by. Today I read his obituary. Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance, for Common Sense had served us all so well for so many generations.

we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair , and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Aspirin, sun lotion or a Band-Aid to a student, but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know my Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm a Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I found this online and will research who wrote and post credit.

6/08 Hi Bobbie.  There appears to be some confusion in Piha regarding the ownership of the P.O. building. Perhaps at the next R&R meeting the committee can produce some documentation proving ownership and put this contentious issue to rest once and for all.  Anon (author identified in email)

4/4/08    Bobbie: Now we have the (tsunami) alarms fitted are we going to receive some sort of information pack telling us what to do when the alarm goes off?  Are there any practice drills planned or are the alarms just going to rust there on the posts?  I'm sorry about you people down south not having an alarm, if it goes off I'll text or email you!  Stay alert!  Thanks - Love ya Bobbie

Protect Piha Heritage are appealing ARC & WCC's granting of resource consent for a Cafe in PIha to the Environment Court under the following conditions:

  • It must be shown how the applicant can stay within the noise limits for the site.
    • Is there some reason that Protect Piha Heritage (PPH) seems to have ignored the rather large extension, with a new building, to the RSA deck?  The noise that rockets out from there, not to mention the traffic, is much more of a problem than any little cafe could make - just ask the people camping in the Domain - Bobbie

  • Hours of operation 10 am to 5 pm Mondays to Saturdays (inclusive), excluding Public Holidays.
    • Show me any cafe in New Zealand, or the world, that isn't open for breakfast.  What's up with the 'no Sundays or Public Holidays' PPH?  This is a cafe not a bank, or ... I am having a problem trying to think of any business these days that can't open 7 days a week.   The only argument left in NZ about 7 day trading is Easter now isn't it?  As for not open on Public Holidays : if that is seriously what you want then lets shut The Store, The Bowler and The RSA, Lion Rock Surf Shop and the Art Gallery on Public Holidays too uh?  Bobbie

  • Seating for only 35 people inside, and none outside.
    • A cafe with NO outside seating - this is unimaginable madness - its 2008 we're in not 1988 !  You can't be serious?   Last time I counted there was outside seating at The Piha Store for 38 people and they don't even have resource consent not to mention a toilet!  Bobbie

  • No alcohol
    • Not even in the cooking?

  • No takeaways
    • Why?  I can get takeaways from The Store, The RSA, Blairs and the Bowler.  What if I can't finish my food? Can I not take it home with me even though I have paid for it?  What's the problem with taking food or a coffee or iced tea away?  Bobbie

  • No odour, and no outside cooking
    • NO odour?  Odour of what?  I recall reading, in the underground in London from memory, that if they made a perfume with the scent of coffee it would be a best seller.  Ah, the smell of freshly brewed coffee ..... on a Sunday morning with the paper.  Is that available on the Viaduct? I know its available in Herne Bay because I lived there for over 20 years.  Bobbie

  • Realistic wastewater conditions and monitoring.
    • What is realistic?   The monitoring of the other 'eating places' in Piha - there isn't any!!!   How about the wastewater conditions and monitoring at The Store?  Would you be happy if they used them as a blue print?   Bobbie

So, Protect Piha Hheritage,  you don't mind a Cafe in Piha as long as only 35 people sit inside, you can't smell anything, they can't see anything, can't eat much, can't listen to anything over 3 decibals, and kids moaning because they want to go outside but can't because Mum or Dad have to sit inside - is that the picture you see? I suppose we could ask for another condition: 'no kids'.   This is all madness at its extreme.

AND let us not forget that all the time these continued arguments are going on The Piha Cafe guys, Preserve Piha, continue to allow the Piha Community Post Office to operate from their property FREE - not even a peppercorn rental!   And then to have Chris Warman, the Post Mistress, insult these guys at the R & R AGM, when they asked if the R & R could possibly mow the lawns, Chris said they were burly, fit young fit men and should mow the lawns themselves!

Don't forget, everyone, its your ARC and WCC rates that are paying for this protracted nonsense now.  It's these councils that have to hire legal minds etc to defend their decision.

So the signs are being cleaned up in PIha.

Fiona, Piha Domain Camp, has a $300 infringement notice to pay.
Blairs, South Piha, has been threatened with one.
$1500 for a resource consent for a sign - we all have that kind of spare change!

BUT seems one has been forgotten ..... at the intersection of Seaview, Glen Esk and Beach Valley.  Is there a reason this one is OK but not the others?

OK Everyone - we're safe.
If a tsunami is heading our way these horns all over Nth Piha and near the Gallery no doubt will ring out and let us all know so we can rush for the hills. (Hope they have battery backup!)

Seems they don't care so much about us in South Piha - haven't spotted any here yet.

So if you hear them  - - - -  Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnn fast

29/2/08 Malicious Gossip:  Let's put a stop to the malicious gossip, circulated by Protect Piha Heritage Chair Sandra Coney, that I am interested in buying some local property with a view to opening or building a Cafe in South Piha!  This is just scaremongering at its worst.  Ah just to have the time would be a nice thing!   If I did have the time I'd rather be swimming, reading a good book, gardening or anything else thanks.  If you hear this rumour can you dispell it please ............................ phew!   Bobbie.
29/2/08 Breaking News:  Protect Piha Heritage is  appealing to Environment Court.  That same Tui bird popped in and confirmed  that Protect Piha Heritage has prepared an appeal to the Environment Court against the Resource Consent by WCC & ARC for a cafe in Piha to proceed.  Watch your rates be gobbled up by ARC and WCC defending their resource consent decision in this fruitless appeal.  It will cost us ratepayers thousands and thousands of dollars!

Members of Protect Piha Heritage that applied for the incorporation of PPH:
Elizabeth Hawker - Piha
Kath Dewar - Piha
Sheena von Bassewitz - Piha
Fiona Anderson - Piha
Mary Mead - Piha
Jim Stephenson - Piha
A.R. Barnes - Piha
Zeke Wolf - Piha

Peter Hosking & Sandra Coney - Viaduct Harbour, Auckland - lots of very nice cafes on Viaduct
Monique & Mischa Davis - Oratia (Mother / daughter)
Susan Davis & Gregor Nicholas  - Herne Bay - lots of nice cafes in Herne Bay
David Falla - Karekare
Helen Pearce (Sister to Sandra Coney above) Pt Chevalier - lots of nice Cafe's in Pt Chev

Megan Hosking (daughter of Peter Hosking above) & Francis Salole- Wellington -  Brooklyn, Wellington, has yummy Cafe's

So why can't we have a coastal  Cafe in Piha ???

29/2/08 Dear Bobbie,
Aaaaah, the bloody council and the signs.  I got fined $300 for my Piha Camp sign on the corner of Glen Esk Road.

To be fair I was asked to remove it. I said that I would remove it when all the other signs in Piha that didn't have resource consent were also removed. I have bitten the bullet and removed it, I will pay the fine because I don't want to pay $1500 to leave it there.

So tell me- does the Surf Club have consent for the sign on Scenic Dr advertising "Open for Meals" (Which, by the by should also by law say "For Members and their Guests.")?

And tell me- The RSA is in constant and flagrant breach of their un-notified consent   "That the northern deck be closed and cleared of all people by 10pm every night". How come they aren't fined or ordered to cease and desist?

Fiona Anderson

23/2/08
Oh Dear!!   Seems someone has taken exception to Blair's sign, left, as it breaks the 'rules' about signage in Piha.

Seems that to make the sign legal Blair & Co have to pay $1500, yes 15 red ones, for Resource Consent AND another 5 red ones for 'monitoring..

Now no one wants Piha filled with signage BUT .........................

Re Blairs sign...    I am never surprised to find that some in our community have nothing better to do with their lives and time than complain about what basically is a very cool in-offensive direction finding sandwich board.

Piha is fast becoming known as the place to live if you're a whining anti- every bloody thing frustrated nosy fanatic.

When my townee friends come to visit I  use Blairs sign as a point of reference, since I am pro what makes this community special and Blairs Place does so I am donating a hundie to the boys.

Murdoch.

23/2/08 Hi readers    Just thought you may find it rather amusing as I did. I managed to push Bobbie around for a whole day and she didn?t complain once !!!! How is this possible you ask ?

Naturally there was a reason: I had her in a wheelchair at Waitakere Hospital, something of a marathon just waiting so many hours. Still she is on the mend now and even though she has the boot there will be no Moon walking just now. Regards  Shirley Bond - Piha

3/2/08  Beach Valley Road, Piha had a new footpath put in by the Council last year - great!

But, duh, any chance of putting a little drainage under it so the water can drain off the road?

Or we could all play  "drive through the water and splash the pedestrians" - that's a fun game!  You could even score more points if you get the water into the pram!   Helen and Anna will love that game ???

This winter when you walk down Beach Valley Road and you get to the end of the 'new' raised footpath you'll then have to tread water (see left) making way onto the older lower part of the footpath.

Is this a 'waste water' problem Simon?

22/2/08  The 'Yes! Campaign'  now has more signatures in support of a Cafe in Piha than belong the Ratepayers & Residents Association !!!

23/2/08  Well well:  Great flooding in Beach Valley Road outside #45 is not surprising I suppose.

With all that sand moved in front of the property where is the rain to go?

It's ponding and causing pretty yukky flooding on the drive way (who cares) and onto the road - whoops!

It'll be fun getting through there in the winter !!!

Big Wave Classic in Piha

Who do you think was dressed more appropriately for the day?

That Visitor from Hawkes Bay (left) or Mike Moran?

Oh well - Mike was up half the night singing to Piha's millionaire club so we can excuse him I suppose.

23/2/08  Anyone lost a Dog Carrier in Sylvan Glade or even Rayner Road Piha?

This is photographed in our stream!!!  Probably blown there in this shocking weather.  Well not too shocking because its filling all our water tanks!

16/2/08  Hi Bobbie ,
Lilly pond at present has 3 baby pukekos growing up fast and 4 shags ready to leave the nest. Check them all out in the next week before the dredging gets done. They mature really fast and I am sure the kids will love to see them. The baby shags or pied cormorants are in the pohutakawa across from the clear water away from the road in a rough nest made of sticks. The pukeko chicks can be seen foraging on the lilies with either mum or dad. Sorry do not have a great camera for distance shots.

NZ Herald: Anyone else ever wondered why the NZ Herald seems to only publish negative things about Piha?  Has Wayne Thompson got a problem with cheerful news and happy people?

7/2/08 Re 'Yes to Cafe in Piha  Campaign'

Hi Bobbie,   I was one of the supporters yesterday and just wanted to say 'Thank you for organising this - it's about time the boys had a voice and who better to do it!'

I would also like to add that the graffiti was not only pointless, destructive and disgraceful it was incredibly poor taste considering there was someone actually stabbed to death last week due to graffiti and vandalism.

[ Removed at request of author]

Go Bobbie and girls!

Regards  Name withheld by request

It was my idea but I cannot take credit for organising it - there were 9 in all that organised it - photo below - Bobbie

7/2/08   Tina Grenville-Cagwin reports that she has recently had a telephone conversation with Sandra Coney concerning the issue of a cafe at Piha and she has expressed surprise at the amount of energy going into opposing the café when much more important issues seem to be on the back-burner as far as the Protect Piha's Heritage Trust is concerned.  In a written reply to Sandra, Tina set out her feelings.

Two quotes from her response are:-

 1.  'Far more important for every one of the West Coast beaches is the fact that the crayfish, huge crabs which used to click over the rocks in droves, the fish and the mussels have all but gone in my lifetime.  To spend such energy trying to stop a proposed café in the face of these other catastrophies seems a strange priority.

I remember similar misgivings over the existence of our Art Gallery and even the building of a new library.  Now, of course, they are considered assets, and rightly so.

However, in the meantime much bad blood and ill-will rends this small population in two, unnecessarily damaging and toxic.

I will be supporting a café at the end of my road as an asset to the community that I have the greatest good fortune and privilege to live in.'

 2.  'It seems to me that, if the majority of Piha residents vote 'yes' to having a café, and you decide to take it to the Environment Court in hope of changing the decision, this could

be -

(1)   tremendously expensive and endlessly delaying, but more important,

(2)   it will go against the majority wishes of the people who live here permanently.

You know, having somewhere to meet friends that is both civilized and within the spirit of our community (Piha cannot be described as a 'village', having no village amenities or structure) sounds an improvement to me.'

No!  I wasn't throwing coffee.

Throwing that paper coffee cup was a 'symbolic' gesture, suggested by a supporter, to show we would like to drink our coffee out of a bowl, mug or cup please rather than paper cups.

That's it !   Bobbie

6/3/08                        "YES!  Campaign for a Cafe in Piha"

Yes! here they are:  The Piha women who will not be intimidated and are willing to stand up and encourage others to have their say about a Cafe in Piha - their home town.  From left: Yvonne, Norma, Gillian, Marilyn, Julia (doing a Cafe Haka), Helen, Pat, Gabrielle and Bobbie.

Above and below:  A picture says a thousand words.

I haven't counted the numbers but 165 adults, with only 24 hours notice and in 30 minutes signed the 'YES! campaign for a Cafe in Piha' today Many others sent their apologies and messages of support.  (The Piha Ratepayers and Residents only had 116 financial members, according to their annual accounts, in 2007!!!)

Hi Bobbie

It's very unfortunate that today's acts of vandalism in Piha have tainted the community dialogue about the café.

The Protect Piha Heritage group deplores the actions of those who have defaced the road and public property with painted slogans and I must point out that the description on your website of the perpetrators as Protect Piha Heritage 'supporters' is completely unfounded.

Desecration of the Piha environment flies in the face of our group's principles and intentions and we believe that such vandalism is a totally inappropriate, offensive and unlawful way to express a point-of-view, no matter how strongly felt.

I therefore ask that you remove the allegation on your website that those involved are Protect Piha Heritage 'supporters'

Yours sincerely,  Gregor Nicholas  for Protect Piha Heritage

4/2/08  Some thoughts on the Piha Post Office situation:

At the Piha R & R AGM recently, I was horrified to hear that the Committee was proposing, without further consultation with the community, to move the existing post office building onto the land owned by the Piha Store, the resultant costs being, at the very least $8,000 to $10,000 and up to $16,000 to $18,000 if the Waitakere City Council does not make a decision to waive resource consent costs.   The Committee seems to believe that it has a mandate to proceed because of the previous public meeting which passed a motion to support the continuation of the post office by purchasing the land on which it stands (hoping, from what I understand, that the WCC would come to the party or that Telecom would gift the land to the community).  This did not eventuate, of course, so I believe that the matter should go back to the community for further consultation for the following reasons:-

  1. The enormous costs to move the building to a new site for a post office that is open only 6 hours a week is totally unjustified.
  2. The present contract with NZ Post (and on which the viability of the Post Office depends) is only on a month to month basis and could be cancelled at short notice.
  3. The present store owner may be happy to have the post office on his land, but there is no guarantee that this would be agreeable to any future owner should the store be sold.
  4. There is no guarantee that Bob Harvey's suggestions of waiving resource consent fees would apply - the matter of such a donation would require a Council decision which would not be favoured by many Councillors.
  5. There is presently a rural delivery service which delivers mail at the gate at NO COST.
  6. The store, the gallery, the camp ground or the library could all sell stamps.
  7. The present post office does not offer the range of services found at other post offices, so that its servicing potential is small.
  8. A member of the community has offered a set of post boxes, at no cost, which could be used as a basis for contracting, to any community person willing to undertake the service, the regular sorting of mail for those who still wish to retain a box at Piha.  Many people do not realize that the provision of private boxes can be made by anyone - it does not need NZ Post approval, only an agreement for the contractor to act on the box holder's behalf.  This would be a far more economic option.
  9. The camp ground contractor has previously indicated a willingness to provide a space for boxes and this could be a 6 or 7 day a week service - a big improvement on 6 hours a week.

I do not believe that the previous mandate given at the general meeting covers the totally changed set of circumstances that now apply.  When I mentioned this at the meeting, both Sandra Coney and Helen Pearce insisted that I was wrong - I don't think so!

I am strongly of the opinion that the community needs to be given the chance to re-consider this whole question in the light of the changed circumstances and in view of the enormous waste of Piha R & R resources when there are far more important issues which could absorb reserves - for example the money that we previously needed to fight the development at 36 Piha Road, which cost the community over $11,000 at the time.

Come on, Piha R & R Committee; take this matter back to the community (and not just to the small number of members of the Association) for informed consideration of all the options.

The picture below has 2 identical dolphins in it. It was used in a
case study on stress levels at St. Mary's Hospital.
Look at both dolphins jumping out of the water. The dolphins are
identical. A closely monitored, scientific study revealed that, in
spite of the fact that the dolphins are identical, a person under
stress would find differences in the two dolphins. The more
differences a person finds between the dolphins, the more stress that
person is experiencing.
Look at the photograph and if you find more than one or two
differences you may want to take a vacation.

6/2/08  RE; Piha Post Office:  I think there should be a full vote on this matter before rate payers funds are spent. I love having the post office here but would not want it to be a financial burden on the community as I think other projects could return more to us all.  Berend

2/2/08  Today I was talking to a resident from Muriwai.  She tells me that the cafe there is a community asset - a neutral meeting place for the community, does not generate more traffic and is on land leased to the cafe by ARC. Name withheld by request
30/1/08 What about the road re-sealing. Tar covered chips littering the road (and my front lawn) from Piha to the Karekare turnoff!!  I?m all for road improvement, but at this time of the year? What on earth is the Council thinking??!!
30/1/08   When is the 'temporary' bridge over the stream going to be replaced.?  Clearly the builders has no idea of double pushchairs ,surfboards & even large beachgoers when they set it?s width.  Perhaps Bob Harvey would like to use it with his surf board when a pram is coming from the other side.  Tony Sullivan   54 Rayner Rd

27th Jan 08 Piha Ratepayers & Residents AGM - My observations

It was wonderful to see so many turn up for this AGM.   We are ratepayers (or residents) in Piha and its very important (whether you like it or not) that you join the R & R as they represent us regardless of how many financial members they have.  So all of you new faces - good on you for joining up.
  • Financials:
    • Interesting to note that in the 2006/7 year the R & R only had 116 financial members (plus life members - unknown amount) - less that the number that receive my e-newsletter and far too small a number to really be representative of us all hence my pleasure in all the new faces at the AGM.
    • The Post Office's profit was down 85% on the previous years.  This was due, in part, to a realignment of reporting private box receipts.
    • The library, which has a 1,000 members, made a trading loss due to no grants received and an increase in purchases and maintenance.  They have healthy investments so no problems there.
  • Guest Speaker:
    • Tony Miguel, from Waitakere City Council spoke regarding Water Quality in Piha.  Tony was joined by Simon Brown and answered many interesting questons from the audience.  The bottom line is that the Council is working toward ensuring the RSA, Bowling Club and Sth Piha Surf Club's sewage is up to standard and not polluting the Piha Lagoon.  Tony and Simon reported that the Lagoon is in reasonably good condition and unsafe for swimming pretty rarely.
  • Piha Community Post Office:
    • It's now official that the R & R have had 'preliminary' Resource Consent discussions with WCC, in October '07, to move the Post Office building onto the property of the Piha Store.  If you are looking at the store the proposed site is to the right behind the fence where AWOL currently have their storage.

We now have the proposed Cafe site, the Piha Store, Lion Rock Surf shop and the Piha Community Library in Piha's natural 'hub' and it is now proposed that another retail or service outlet join these.

I have no problem with retaining the Post Office BUT I have a huge problem with what appears to be changing the argument when it suits you.

I moot the idea that in pursuing this line, or supporting it,  the R & R and Protect Piha's Heritage can no longer be concerned about the traffic and noise in this area - a strong argument they used as part of their opposition to a Cafe.   You can't have it both ways or can you?

The estimated costs of moving the building will use ALL of the Post Office's (our) financial reserves ($15,000) plus WCC will waive approximately $8,000 from Waitakere Ratepayers coffers!

What do you think?  Email Village Voice your thoughts on Piha Post Office move

Council Advise:  "The Piha R&R were advised at their pre-application meeting that any resource consent for relocation of the Post Office would be likely to be notified."

  • Thundercat Racing North Piha 9th Feb:  A lot of disgruntled people spoke up regarding this event being granted consent to hold their event in Piha.  Access to the beach, does it 'fit' with Piha etc.  Kubi Witten-Hannah is following this up.  :)
  • Vehicles on Piha Beach:  People expressed their concerns on this subject which is great. Both ARC and WCC took these concerns on board.
  • Bouquet: A vote of thanks was given to Liz & Keith Franich for the huge amount of work put in the Piha Community Centre renovation of Barnett Hall, Piha

30/1/08 I was unable to attend the R&R AGM so thankyou Bobbie for your report.

About the Post Office - Its great that plans are finally underway to move it. It's been a long dry argument. If all their funds are going to be used to move it and the profit was down 85% this year can the Post Office sustain itself in the future.  If it is on the Piha Store land, is this piece land to be given to the community, sold to or rented. If rented can it afford the extra expense, will it be allowed to sell other things to help the funds.

In any event there will need to be a Special General Meeting of members to authorise the spending to move it. Regards  Shirley Bond

Hi Bobbie:  Re Post Office:  I noted that President Tony said at the AGM that if necessary the Reserve Manage Plan could be re-opened to llow for sealing the road across the Domain.

It must therefore follow that the Plan could be re-opened to allow for re-location of the PO building opposite the custodian's house on the Domain.  In that position it could be used as a Post Office or as a community meeting facility if NZ Post decide not to renew their monthly contract for a PO in Piha.

Piha Rescue:  Rumour has it that Piha Rescue has pulled the plug on filming - can anyone confirm?

Some years ago now fundraising started for a new and larger Community Library at Piha.  Following are some of the objections stated from some Piha people:
  1. The present (old) library adds to Piha's character and should be retained
  2. There is no need for a 'flash' library in Piha
  3. If people want library books they should go to Henderson
  4. Piha's ambience and atmosphere would be adversely affected by the removal of our 'quaint' library

Hard to think, now, that people could object to such 'developement' really?  Bobbie

16/1/08 Piha Lagoon Pollution
This photo used by Preserve Piha Heritage with the word 'pollution' tightly associated with it is a misrepresentation..

THIS IS NOT POLLUTION - This is a natural occurance (see spirogyra below) when temperatures change rapidly with certain non-pollutants in the lagoon.

This is an absolute misrepresentation of Piha Lagoon.

21/1/08   Dear Bobbie,

You have recently posted a personal comment about the photograph of the Piha Lagoon that appears in the flyer 'What's so wrong with a café at Piha anyway?' by Protect Piha Heritage.

You have made a claim that Protect Piha Heritage is saying that the algal bloom in the photograph is the pollution referred to. The flyer nowhere says that. The photograph was taken in December at the date that the water quality testing showed the lagoon was very seriously polluted. It would have been hard to take a photograph at that time without including the bloom which was extensive.

Isn't the real issue that the lagoon is so polluted that 'No Swimming' signs have been erected? I attach one of these for your readers' interest.

Unfortunately, it only appears at the bridge over the lagoon, not near the many other places that children play in this water, including where the Piha Stream enters the beach, which has become a popular family swimming spot these days.

We know the City and various people are working hard to identify the sources of the pollution, and then remedy these. Our argument is that no more potential sources of pollution should be contemplated while Piha has such an intractable water quality problem.

Dear Sandra,

Referring to  "the personal comment about the photograph" as the editor of Village Voice I retain the right to edit and comment in my column.

The above  mentioned photo takes 2/3 of a page in your "What's wrong with a Cafe in Piha anyway?" flyer with the words "The Piha Lagoon, which ..............................., is currently seriously polluted":   The flyer may not state that the algae bloom in the photo is the pollution referred to, but Sandra you know as well as I do, that by putting THOSE words next to THAT photo,  the inference and intention is that both are associated - such is the power of suggestion.  We both know it is not the case.

The algae bloom was only there for 4, maybe 5 days, so any other photo could have been used or taken!!!   This green slime is probably Spirogyra.*

No, I don't agree with your comment  "Isn't the real issue is that the lagoon is so polluted?"  I believe Protect Piha Heritage's (PPH) real issue is you don't want a Cafe in Piha and are using the ongoing problems of other commercial establishments probably polluting the Lagoon as ammunition to stop a Cafe being put (not built) into the disused old telephone exchange building which is older than the current Post Office building.

Having looked at figures for the last 5 or 6 years there is undeniably an improvement in how often the Lagoon is unsafe.   If we look at Water Test Results we can see that Piha's Lagoon water is in far better health than: Bethels, Karekare Lagoon & Karekare Carpark for freshwater results and also healthier than Te Atatu Peninsula, Fosters Bay, Huia Beach and French Bay for marine water results..

It is also my understanding that when the Lagoon is not safe to swim in (a couple of times this summer) that it is usually, if not always, safe at the lower water, near Lion Rock.

"The authorities are working hard to find the source of the pollution and to fix it" you say.  Not fast enough for me.  I've said it before and will repeat:  whenever the lagoon is polluted just close the RSA and Bowling Club IMMEDIATELY.  Then lets see the problem get fixed mighty fast!. Also test the stormwater pouring into the Lagoon from Seaview Road under Beach Valley Road.

When Julia and I operated 'The Piha Kitchen' from the Piha RSA's premises we often had power cuts.  Legally the RSA had to close if the power was off for an hour.  The reason being the toilets could not flush which was a health hazzard.  Surely the same concept could be applied to the Lagoon pollution - shut it.

Where was PPH, or its members, when the RSA (right on the lagoon and its sewage rather suspect)  extended its deck and built another 'room for the smokers' on it?  Why wasn't everyone jumping up and down about the Lagoon pollution and traffic / parking problems then?  This is a far greater threat to the Lagoon than any small cafe a loooooong way away, relatively speaking, from the Lagoon.  And how come the RSA were allowed to do this without Public Notification?   It's past history now but we can surely draw a parallel.

However  back to my initial point:  I believe Protect Piha Heritage (PPH), by mere association, suggests that the natural condition in THAT  photo of the Lagoon was pollution which it isn't.

I also believe that PPH's primary objective is to stop a Cafe in Piha.  Once the waste water and effluent from the proposed Cafe has gone through the most modern and sophisticated septic system available (that the boys plan to install) it'll practically be safe to drink - it would be highly improbable for it to pollute the Lagoon.

Maybe you could clarify to my readers what 'heritage' Protect Piha Heritage wishes to protect?

Regards - Bobbie  Editor Village Voice

* Spirogyra: (by Jan Parmentier) In almost every ditch in Holland with reasonably clean water we will in summer find slimy masses of filamentous algae, floating as scum on the surface. It looks rather distasteful, but a ditch like that is not polluted, only eutrophic (rich in nutrients). In spring these filamentous algae grow under water but when there is enough sunlight and the temperatures are not too low, they produce a lot of oxygen, sticking in little bubbles between the tangles of the algae. These come to the surface and become visible as slimy green masses.  Read more about SPIROGYRA here

Hi Bob (Harvey Mayor of Waitakere City)

Don't you think Waitakere eco city should act now to fix up this mess? I'm not sure if you have grand-children, but would you let them paddle in this water?

I think it's pretty shameful that the local community (of which I am a member and therefore shoulder responsibility) have let it get to this state, but the council, especially given it's eco philosophy, is also responsible for allowing pollution of the Piha lagoon to grow to such alarming levels.

Let's catch up soon to talk about what we can do about it.

Best  (Edited)  Piha Property Owner

The Mayor answers:

(Edited)

At the last AGM of the Piha R&R I got very concerned about this. Tony Miguel who runs EcoWater was present and I asked him if we could have the lagoon cleaned up and could we put a stop to the pollution. It wasclear from the audience that they were citing the RSA, the bowling club as major polluters - I said to Tony Miguel and to the Councillors - how can we talk about being a safe city and get all these damn awards for being the safest city in NZ etc and allow this sort of thing to happen?  Close both these organisations until they come to the party and clean up their acts.

Well I have to say all kinds of council speak went on - the worst kind of political hoo ha, they felt it was still be looked at, investigated and tested. That it might not be just the RSA and bowling club but other possible reasons. None of this I have taken with anything other than contempt. I believe that the lagoon can and should be cleaned up and it should be done now.

I totally agree with you - it's a bloody scandal and it has been for years. The local people are not fools - they know who the culprits are and they are simply being talked out of it into more endless and pointless talk fests.

We have the money and we have a commitment to safety so we should do it. I am going to copy Tony Miguel in on this email and you have my permission to use my comments as widely and as publicly as you like.

13/1/08 A letter regarding Cafe Activity at Piha from Chris, Andy & Rich of Piha

Dear Sandra, Peter, Susan, Kath and other interested parties,

We are concerned by the latest developments regarding the cafe including some rather unscrupulous and misguided propaganda circulated around the Piha community over the weekend.   As you know there has been an extensive resource consent planning exercise over the past 18 months culminating in a 3 day joint ARC / WCC hearing before Christmas.     During this exercise all of the issues raised in the 4 page document entitled "What's so wrong with a cafe at Piha anyway"?  have been thoroughly examined, analysed and addressed by various technical experts in their respective fields.   We are all awaiting the outcome of this comprehensive process in the form of a decision from the commissioners which is expected in February.

While we would rather wait for due process, given the approach taken by Protect Piha Heritage (PPH), we will make a brief comment on each of the issues raised in order to provide a more balanced perspective:

1.      More Noise

Acoustic testing has revealed that noise level guidelines are already being exceeded in this area of Piha due to the Store, RSA and camp ground related activity.   Piha is one of West Auckland's playgrounds.  It is an iconic surf spot and coastal village.   It regularly hosts surf and lifesaving events, market days, dance parties, car rallies and family events and understandably holidays and weekends are the busiest times. In this context a small scale daytime cafe is in keeping with the existing activity of the area. The design and materials used for the build of the cafe combined with landscaping and fences will mitigate the impact of any increased noise levels.

2.      More Wastewater Problems.

The problem with wastewater was a key issue dealt with thoroughly at the hearing by the ARC.    If our proposal is allowed to go ahead it will be on the basis that we install a highly sophisticated and durable system which is subjected to constant monitoring to ensure we are operating within the systems capacity.  We plan to utilise water saving fixtures in the cafe.  In addition, menu design and operating procedures will be developed to minimize water usage.

In order to tackle the problems at the lagoon it would seem to make more sense to target existing systems operating in closer proximity to the lagoon.   For example the sheer numbers of Store patrons taking advantage of the Camp Ground's overused and antiquated facilities should be of real concern in this regard.

3.      More Traffic

In addition to the parking already available we have undertaken to provide 10 carparks on site.  This should enhance the traffic flow in an area which has never had a traffic management plan.  For example, cars will be able to re-enter Seaview Road travelling forward due to the turning circle we will be providing rather than having to reverse onto a busy road as they do now.  Piha village is already an incredibly popular destination and this unique site is ideally located next to the other community amenities as confirmed by council planners in their report.

We are all concerned about the life-threatening road safety issues on some sections of the Piha Road, such as the 'snake'.   We would enthusiastically support efforts by Protect Piha Heritage to campaign for improved road safety.

4.      A commercial development on a residential site.

This site has not been used for residential purposes for many years.   It is unique in that it is situated within the central 'node' of community services identified by council planners. Potential residential site development is hampered by the public telephone boxes and public bus stop on the site. We believe that our proposal is sensitive to the character of Piha and the environment and our proposal is well within development baseline for the site.

We whole-heartedly agree with your sentiments around protecting the "laid-back, rough-at-the-edges beachside ambience" at Piha.    There are many businesses currently operating in Piha and Karekare.  We believe a small beach café need not be "the thin end of the wedge".   Cafe consents have been granted in the past. It is a fact of life that there will be proposals in the future, each of which will be considered on its own merits by council in accordance with the RMA and local planning considerations and needs.

Whilst we admire your energy and passion, rather than going back over tired ground perhaps it would be more constructive to focus our collective efforts on some of the greater issues facing Piha in order to preserve it for present and future generations, for example, the increasingly horrifying threat of a large scale forest fire in the Waitakeres.

At the end of the day where is the real threat to Piha's future?  Is it a group of local individuals with a low impact proposal to provide choice to the community or the threat from "big business" related to high-impact development? We too are passionate about Piha. We recognize that it is a special place and as such should not be spoiled by over-development.

Please feel free to circulate this email as widely as you would like as we think it is important that people are well informed.  We would welcome the opportunity to sit around the table with PPH to discuss your concerns and ensure we achieve the best possible outcome for our community.

Warm regards,

Chris, Andy and Rich

Responses:

1)  Hi there

I am pleased to see you are being balanced in your communication around the issue of the cafe - unfortunately, not many other people are.

I live in Titirangi and have been going to Piha very regularly since I came to NZ 10 years ago. I regularly take overseas visitors out there but they (and myself) are often disappointed by the facilities out there. The store is OK but I find the staff, at times rude and arrogant. A viistor from the UK commneted last year that the place could do with a decent cafe, somehwere where you could have a coffee and maybe (heaven forbid) a glass of wine while you enjoy the scenery.

The comments about preventing the commercialisation of Piha are nonsensical - this is a place with million dollar houses, $200 per night 'baches' and $4 pottles of chips from the "beach shack". It seems to be a parocial attitude to 'outsiders' - although I understand some of the owners of the proposed cafe have strong Piha connections.

The outcry over the cafe being able to apply for a liquor license is ridiculous - anyone can walk into the RSA at the moment and order a drink ( as I did on Friday night)...and the place seems able to quite happliy make plenty noise until 2am (I stayed in the campground on Friday night and it was 2am before someone outside the RSA was told to "shut the f--- up".

It seems that many Piha residents are happy for commercialisation as long at it benefits themselves. A cafe at Karekare would not be good but at Piha - bring it on, I say. I have a trim decaf soy latte.

I would be really interested in the results of the online poll you ran - some residents I know who are in favour of the cafe do not feel comfortable speaking out, for fearing of being accused of "destroyong PIha" - your poll gives them an environment in which to express their opinions.

Regards Janet      (  http://www.pihabeach.co.nz/Piha_-_Polls_and_Survey_Results.htm )

2) Hi Bobbie
Thanks for keeping us up to date with info regarding the cafe.  We are all for it and think it would be a great asset to Piha and it's residents and feel that it's a shame the the loudest voice is not necessarily what the community all want.  Keep up the good work

3)  Wouldn't it be nice if every time the lagoon failed the water tests that the RSA, Bowling Club and Surf Club were immediately closed.   The pollution and sewage problem would be fixed pretty smartly.  Bobbie

4) Hi Bobbie,

A friend has just sent me your web site with Village Voice.  It is a great site and this platform is an excellent way for people to speak out.

I have been surfing at Piha for more years than I like to admit and I have always thought how nice it would be to have a cafe to relax in after a great surf.  There used to be tearooms in Piha many years ago so what is all the fuss about?  It sounds very anal to me.

I was interested to read the letter from Chris, Andy and Rich who I gather are some of the people doing this cafe.  Makes sense to me.  If there has been a hearing and they are waiting on the findings of the Commissioners, then why continue to stir the pot?  Is it sour grapes?  Sure sounds like it.  Perhaps they realise they may not win the hearing and so are continuing to try and drum up support and no doubt money!

Oh well, I will continue to read your Village Voice to keep informed.  Thanks for putting it out there.

Regards,
John L.

5) Re the 4 page "information sheet" put out by the handful of people opposed to the new Cafe - ( Protect Piha Heritage):

Please explain to me why the proposed "cafe will only be permitted to serve heated-up and pre-prepared meals because of the limits of the wastewater system"?.

How come the RSA, Bowling Club, Surf Club, Blair's on the Beach and Piha Store are allowed to prepare and serve full meals and takeaways when they all have major problems with wastewater and have contributed enormously to the pollution of the lagoon.

The Camp Ground has a large kitchen on site where all the campers (200 plus per day in the summer) all prepare food for themselves and they then wash their dishes.

This whole thing has become ridiculous.

Hannah

6)  Hi Bobbie

Thanks for the latest info on the proposed Piha cafe.

I think that the letter from the guys presents further balanced information compared to the emotional and selfserving claptrap from those opposed, some of the most vocal being other commercial interests.

I have been a Piha person and keen surfer for over 45 years and do not believe that this type of development would impact negatively on Pihas special characteristics.
keep up the good work

7) Hi Bobbie,

I think Sandra should take up surfing, I?m sure Mike Jolly would have something to suit. Keep up the good work.  Jim

8) Dear Andy, Chris and Rich

Thanks for your email.

The flyer 'What's so wrong with a cafe at Piha anyway?' was prepared to explain to the local community and visitors to Piha issues raised by the cafe proposal. It was also aimed at updating people after an outdated and inaccurate article appeared in the most recent Piha Community News. Most local people are not aware of the detailed submissions made at the hearing and the flyer shares some of this information, in particular, the wastewater and traffic evidence.

We have attached the flyer to this email in the interests of furthering community and public awareness of the important issues surrounding your proposed development.

Sincerely

9) Hi Bobbie,

I guess the next thing that will be used to fight the cafe will be some obscure and "endangered" flea found only on the proposed cafe site.

10) A quote from the 'What's so wrong with a Cafe at Piha Anyway'  full colour 4 page pamplet against a Cafe in Piha:
"Piha is a wilderness area.  This is why people live here.  This is why people visit.  I am concerned that what I call the suburbanisation of Piha will destroy the environment that makes Piha What it is.  If this consent is granted it will make a mockery of the Waitakere City Council's claims about Waitakere being an Eco City"  Keith Bishop's, Lone Kauri Lodge, Karekare  (NOT Piha

11)  Hi Bobbie,

I've already made my views known by way of letter to NZ Herald, but as some of your readers may not have read my letter I will make my comments again (and a few more). Hopefully you will publish it in your newsletter.

If folk want a coffee - have one in town, or take a thermos flask, or have one at the General Store.

We need to remember that part of the reason Piha is so wonderful is that it is relatively unspoiled. The timber milling took out the kauri but it is regenerating. We have superb rain forest down to the sea. This is unique for any international city - within an hour of the airport to drivethrough rainforest to the sea. Rain forest is not just timber - it's also home to the fauna. The bird life is astounding. I have even heard kiwi at night.

I recall in the 90's going to Sharm el Sheik on the Red Sea and having tea in a bedouin tent on the beach. I went back a few years later to find hotels lining the beach and beach chairs for rent.

While the proposed cafe seems relatively innocuous, it is development and will be used as a springboard for the next development. We can either allow it and attempt to prevent further development. Or, prevent further development.

While Mark Ellis comes across as a nice chap doing this for the good of Piha, let's make no mistake, he is doing this to line his pocket as he is a businessman. There is nothing wrong with this, except where he wants to do it.

It's a question of balancing interests, and I firmly believe that the best interests for the long term good of Piha is to prevent further development (which will still inevitably take place) and save this precious gift for future generations.

I'm old enough to recall the desecration of the beautiful old buildings in Queen Street in the 70's and 80's by developers; the overnight unpermitted destruction of our Opera House; the closure of our great tram system which ran around central Auckland; the loss of our rail system, and all in the name of progress. I've sadly learned not to trust developers and politicians to look after us. The developers seek riches, while the politicians seek office, and then seek to retain office. We lesser mortlas must stand up and speak out and not leave it to the developers and politicians to decide what is best for us.

If we still had the old Victorian buildings in Queen Street, the trams, trains and Opera House, Auckland would be a better place.

Let's save Piha as it is for as long as we can.

Best wishes, Alan Clark

7/1/08 Kaka Sightings in Piha

Hi Bobbie,  To add to other contributions on Kaka sightings...we in Glenesk Road have enjoyed hearing Kaka calling, particularly in the vicinity of the Maungaroa Ridge, on and off for about three years now. Their call is a very distinctive raucous cry, often heard just on dusk and usually when flying quite high up.

The Maungaroa Ridge has alot of dead kauri trees which I suspect Kaka love for their source of insects and grubs etc. Possibly the elimination of possums with Arc in the Park has combined to allow Kaka too return seasonally.

One theory put to me by someone in the field was they fly a "circuit" from Great Barrier Island to Little Barrier to Tiri Tiri Matangi to Wenderholm/North Shore to various bush corridors to Waitakere Ranges to Hunua Ranges to Coromandel and back to Great Barrier. Seems plausible.I read a newspaper article about a year ago reporting on increased sightings of Kaka in the North Shore heading west.

Have just returned from 8 beautiful days on Great Barrier Island, so are actually quite sick and tired of Kakas..nah just kidding, they are fun birds and one bird you get to see close up. Beautiful plumage, as John Cleese once said in the dead parrot sketch..remember that?

Huge swarm of bees in South Piha:

Our guests heard them first as this ginormous swarm of bees flew over the Tui Suite from Rayner Road direction.  I was in the garden and wondered what the noise was.   Thousands and thousands of bees came to rest on our Kauri Tree.  We phoned the Council and then spoke to an expert to find they will just stay a day and then move on.  They aren't aggressive and just not to get in their way when they take off.  You'll be sure we won't!!!

Oyster Catcher chick photographed in Piha
I thought you might be interested in this for your Piha newsletter.
In the last month I have been involved in the release of a royal albatross from *&^%&* and several wood pigeons from my home.   I also saw three baby shags hatched and leaving the nest at the Claud Abel reserve.

A kaka was seen and heard over several nights in Garden Road and now a newly hatched variable oyster catcher chick.

CLICK photos for big view (lower photo shows one chick hatched)

I first saw the oyster catcher nest in mid December just above the high water mark and wondered how on earth they would manage to keep it safe. A few visits later, and a perfect display of wounded parent trying to take my attention off the nest, made me realise the eggs were probably still viable.

Despite the odds being stacked against it the first chick hatched on Friday 4th January 2008.   It is great to see the resurgence of bird life and impresses on me the need to make the Piha area a safe place for native birds.

I still see stoat foot prints on the beach and have found several pairs of tui fledgling feet obviously devoured by feral or domestic cats.   We are clearly reaping the benefit from the sterling work of the Ark in the Park project in the Waitakeres.

However we need to be proactive and keep predator levels down. I would encourage everyone to think twice before getting a new cat and perhaps find someone to advise us on better ways to control stoats and possums.

Best Wishes - Berend Westera - Piha

NOTE:  I have edited out parts that would identify where these natives were to protect them - Bobbie
4/1/08  Large Flame Tree branch falls on Sylvan Glade

This Flame tree, council advise, was a twin leader and one of the leaders split out.

The 2nd photo shows how rotten it is inside - its stinks.  Treescape came and tidied it up.  The main trunk is to be removed within a month as it is not safe.

29/12/07  Traffic on Piha Beach
It is beyond my comprehension that the people who oppose a day time Cafe in Piha will continue to allow, unchecked, what is happening on South Piha Beach by the film crew of Piha Rescue!

Today I went down the beach, not to swim as I have a rotten cold, but to sit and enjoy the beach.

As I walked toward the flagged area a camera appeared to be filming within 3 feet of where I was walking.

Sitting on the beach I then notice a vehicle (not IRB) parked at the water mark with a person sitting in it and a camera on a tripod next to it.  See 1st photo below.

It annoys me to lie on the beach and have to look through vehicles to see the ocean etc.-  NOT the IRBs - of course not.

So why aren't the protectors of Piha who talk of the 'character of Piha' or the 'natural and physical qualities and characteristics of an area that contribute to people's appreciation of its pleasantness'  jumping up and down about this invasion of privacy (random filming on the beach) and our view of the ocean?

20/12/07 Neighbourhood Watch
Would it be possible on your site to have local crime alerts. I am often disappointed at hearing of burglaries in the vicinity weeks after the event. It just takes one absentee owner and the neighbourly warnings break down. I really miss the de Bazin's, God only knows why this community didn't get him and his wife a New Year's Honour for their community service not only for the Neighbourhood Watch but for Jack and his local Fire Brigade Service as well. I know they got some recognition but deserved more. Perhaps it would be good also to get the local Community Constable to write a monthly report there is hardly much in the Western Leader these days either. Is the Community Patrol still going? Where's my Piha news, maybe in there.... 3 months after the event....  Mark the Bounder.

Thanks Mark:  I'll ask Neighbourhood Watch if I can publish your suggestion
Piha Patrol is still operating: 021 2529192
Yes, I miss the de Bazin's too

10/12/07 Hi Bobbie   On Saturday walking home from the library I noticed two people standing in the middle of the road staring up at a large Pohutukawa tree (not too unusual in Garden Road!!), not to be one to miss out on something interesting I had a look. High up in the tree was a large bird, bigger than a Kereru, with a parrot type beak digging away at the branch. One old branch had already fallen on the road. I dashed home to get my camera but too late, but checking in my "bird book" I was excited to find it was a Kaka. North Island Kaka, Septentrionalis, 45cm. Named after their calls, they dig in dying wood for grubs and eat fruit, leaves, nectar and insects. Cheers Marilyn

Commissioners reserve decision on Piha cafe

9:00AM Friday December 07, 2007

After three days of hearings, commissioners have reserved their decision on a plan to build a cafe at Piha in west Auckland.

The proposal by a company part-owned by sportsman turned entrepreneur Marc Ellis, has stirred up strong feelings within the beach community. The plan would seen the old Post Office building removed and the telephone exchange converted into a cafe.

It has drawn 199 submissions. Supporters say the cafe will provide a meeting place for locals but opponents cite concerns about extra traffic and noise. A decision is expected early in the New Year.

5 Dec 2007

Hi Bobbie, long time listener, first time caller.I live down on Glenesk and go for a wander down around the local tracks most weekends with the kids. When I was down there last weekend with young Vincent, we were thrilled to discover these lively looking monkeys swinging in the tree tops.We went back later in the day but they appeared to have relocated? Perhaps one of the local rangers trapped them and they've been sent away to a breeding program or, maybe they're still roaming free. I'd be interested to know if anyone else knows where they came from or what happened to them.Regards,Mike

I think this is a great way of getting an idea of what people like, especially the ones that cant be bothered showing up to meetings and dealing with the same old crap, or writing submissions that take time. And especially for people that are too busy working and being positive to be running around trying to stop people that are being negative and archaic!

18/11/07 Hi Bobbie,

I have lived in Wellington since 1971, and I dont think it was that different to the sixties, or eighties, ninities or the present, apart from traffic.I drove cabs around Welly for sixteen years, a good friend of mine drove cabs since the fifties, and I have surfed the coast since 1972.

I grew up at breaker Bay which is the most distant spot from central Wellington, To get to the southcoast from central Wgtn, Brooklyn to Owhiro Bay is the most direct route to the wild south coast, always has been. so I dont understand your statement.

If you take the newtown/island bay route traffic is still the problem, and at least five to ten  minutes longer, brooklyn to Owhiro bay is longer by distance but back then it was open road spead limit, now it is 70 km, but still much faster, only one set of lights, and no other intersections

Regards  Mike Gunson

REPLY: Hi Mike,   My point is:  if an objector to the proposed Cafe in Piha who lives in Brooklyn, Wellington doesn't want Piha to 'change'  then I think we, who would like a cafe in Piha,  could also object to any developement or change in Brooklyn.       That is my point.  I have returned to Brooklyn over the years and would hardly recognise it with all the many many changes.  Bobbie

17/11/07

To Village Voice:  I've never been to Brooklyn in Wellington, but I found this picture of Brookly on the internet. Looks like big changes from the old days alright!   Cheers Mon

16/11/07   Having read a lot of the submissions regarding a possible Cafe in Piha Beach I would like to make two points:

  1. In 1960 I lived for a short time in Brooklyn, Wellington.  All I remember, as a young child, is Brooklyn was at the end of what seemed a long bus ride.  I do remember one grocery shop.  Now if someone in Brooklyn wants to visit Piha and find it the way it was 30 or 40 years ago then I think its fair if I visit Brooklyn now that I find it the same as it was when I was 6?  Is that fair?
  2. Why is it that people who only 'visit' Piha want to tell the permanent residents whether we have enough facilities or not to cater for our needs?  Piha has 100's of permanent residents now - like it or not but Piha is no longer just a 'summer holiday destination'.  The horse bolted when the road was sealed a long time ago.

Bobbie Carroll - permanent resident in Piha for 7 years and property owner for 15.

7/11/07  Kath Dewar has successfully run her own business since Jan 2001 (www.kdconsulting.co.nz) and holds both a BA Hons in Political Science from the University of Leeds and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing. She is also Secretary of the Waitakere Ranges Protection Society, an elected voluntary role, which has given her some knowledge of resource management issues in the area. If anyone would like to discuss the resource consent application for the cafe with Kath they can call her on 8128 406.

25/10:  Dear Bobbie, Your question should be: If an applicant for a cafe was serious about measuring traffic volume and congestion at Piha, why would they do it on a Wednesday, mid-week?  Surely the applicants would want to measure times when traffic and parking pressure are highest, that is, weekends and summer? You might ask, why Preserve Piha Ltd chose a Wednesday.

Then, Bobbie, why knock those of us who want to do the best job to gather evidence for the hearing?

The Resource Management Act requires a critique of an application, and you are quite misinformed or misguided to think that submitters should just replicate what the applicant does. It is standard practice to produce alternative information, that is what the RMA is all about.

Sandra Coney

If the Cafe people did their traffic effect survery on a Wednesday is it OK for opponents to do one on Labour Weekend Monday with the Piha Market on?   Village Voice HERE

22/10/07  Here's another picture, feel free to put in the Village Voice.  It is summer 1985, and the beach is much wider than today. The man in the right bottom corner is standing on the grass bank. Just below him is the first of a series of sand trapping fences that were put in god knows why. But with help of subsequent fences it sure did a great job of trapping sand and building dunes out to sea were there were none. It was a slow process at first as there wasn't much blowing sand to be trapped, but as dry sand started to build up and blow landwards it gathered speed. Then of course all this dry sand blowing about needed to stabilised with planting, eh presto, we have a sand dune and lost half the beach and the view. The big dune across the stream mouth was bulldozed in. I forgot what the original purpose was but do remember it went to court and the judge said it should never have been done but it was too big a job to remove it again?  Monique

22/10/07 The sand on the carpark is amazing (referring to x 2 photos taken 22nd October on What's Happening? ) but not surprising with the relentless and strong westerly winds. How about taking a photo of the other end of the carpark?  The combination of the planting and the low barrier seems to be doing ok in keeping the sand off. But not an ideal solution from esthetic point of view.

Pity all those new Piha residents (and new Council officers) don't remember the days we had steep grass banks on the South Piha beachfront instead of dunes. They were wonderful to sit and walk on, low and flat allowing for a great view and no sand blowing about!  Here are some pix from the past.

This is South Piha 1975 on a big swell storm and king tide. No sand dunes. With the water being able to go right up the Moana stream delta, the sand was of course kept wet and couldn't blow about.

South Piha 1980. The beach was very wide, lots of space for beach users to sit and play. No sand dunes and the Moana stream wasn't channeled.  The wet sand (at high tide) and the low steep grass banks stopped the sand from blowing over top onto the road.

Then someone had the silly idea to reclaim the delta, encase the stream and build a big dune across. In those days there wasn't the knowledge about coastal processes we have now (with only a few enlightened exceptions, whose views were dismissed), nor did we have the RMA.  Once you start interfering and engineering you have to keep engineering, a never ending process of human action/intervention and consequences. South Piha is a mess. We have carparks full of sand, a steeper (and therefore drier) and narrower beach (little space for people to sit at high tide), a disgusting Moana stream mouth, blocked stormwater drains and flooding costing Council thousands.

Planting spinifex alone will not solve all those problems. Council needs to evaluate what past human intervention has done. This is actually a requirement in the Piha Coastal Management Plan that to date has not been acted upon.

Grass is now a dirty word and common sense is out the window. People should go and have a look at the amazing coastal walkway in New Plymouth to see what can be done with grass.

Some food for thought. Cheers, Mon

Bobbie: Taking Monique's suggestion, even though I danced my feet off last night at the Bowler and crawled around the Piha Market Day today, I dragged myself down to South Piha and took some more photos:

This photo clearly shows the dunes in front of the Sth Piha Surf Club with a good covering of spinifix which, if nothing else, catches a lot of the sand, as it is blown up from the beach, and holds it.

This photo is the same area, different angle, again showing how the spinifix has held most of the sand back and what gets through is held by the barrier Mon referred to - not incredibly asthetic but it does the job.

This is further down South Piha past the toilets.  Again it shows how the spinifix has held back a good hunk of the sand blown up.

This shot is just up from the one above but where the walk way  to the beach is.  You can see the sand has come right up onto the car park through the walk way because there is no spinifix holding it.

A problem, as I understand it, is the spinifix causes the sand dunes to increase in height . . .

So although spinifix doesn't fix all the problems it does 'catch' a lot of the sand as it is blown up . . . .  what do you think?

15/10  Bobbie, its been a great day.  Please thank Piha for me. We go on with a  very good Council.  Thanks everybody.  Bob (Mayor of Waitakere)

4/10   Oh come on! When Marc was referring to "Lefty (not leafy) Greenies"  it was just a normal Marc Ellis quip.  He's not a politician who guards every word he says.  He makes mistakes, talks 'off the cuff' and tries to be funny at times.   Sure, it sometimes gets him in a bit of trouble,  but thank God there are still a few people around who don't have to rehearse everything they say before hand, for fear of being "Terribly un-PC"

4/10    To: Mayor Bob Harvey   From: Graeme Lovell -Gadd

Subject: , Piha Camp /Store/Cafe

Mr Harvey :   Have been thinking about Piha

1 Move the camp ground up to the old Boys Brigade Site This would provide a more shelted and secure place for campers and their property.

2/ Use the current site to build a proper sized cafe that will be able to cope with the number of people who go out to the beach.

3/A new store could be built along side.( the current building cannot handle growds very well) it would be a chance to build a fit.to purpose building with proper ww/sw Tanks The Balance of the camp could be used for some parking and the rest for Picnic area as not everybody wants to sit on the beach.

You have to ask the question. why is the RSA Surf Club allowed to operate facilitys along with the Store?

But any one new trying to come in is made to feel un welcome.

Keep up the good work Cheers Graeme

You can put my name on the article.  People have to think about what is best for Piha and the future.  If there isnt change piha might as well have  stayed a saw milling place,  with an unsealed road.  Moving the camp will free up much need rec space and make the camp safer.  Raglin is a good example of what piha could do but on a smaller scale. cheers Graeme

3/10 Hi Bobbie,

At the risk of sounding terribly catty - Just saw the TVNZ clip on the café and Marc Ellis etc.  I wondered if you could take note of  and pass on my comment?

There was a Katherine Dewar who was making comments on the news regarding the café - but funny enough  she doesn't sound like she comes from the area  or from New Zealand infact.  More likely sounds like she is from the UK,  Middle England I would guess.

Unfortunately, this person does not give the impression of being employed - or being educated enough to know exactly what she is talking about either with reference to her blanket statement of water pollution.

My views - as a newcomer to this country from Canada - are neither for or against this cafe  - I do not have any information to make a stance but certainly as a consultant to various industries in New Zealand - would query this person having the time of day on national television.

Kind Regards    Monica MacFadyen

Monica:  Kath Dewar has successfully run her own business since Jan 2001 (www.kdconsulting.co.nz) and holds both a BA Hons in Political Science from the University of Leeds and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing. She is also Secretary of the Waitakere Ranges Protection Society, an elected voluntary role, which has given her some knowledge of resource management issues in the area.

3/10/07   I watched the news this morning from Paraparaumu where I live.  Forget the cafe, I was so disappointed to hear Mark Ellis refer to the 'Leafy Greenies The most dangerous animals on the planet'.   This in the year 2007 when climate change has been accepted as the real thing, this when the world's population is bursting at the seams, This when the reduction in forests throughout the world is one of the main causes of Global Warming,  This when we rely on rapidly decreasing green leaves for the air we breathe. Take away all the greenery including under the sea life from Piha and what do you have left?

Someone needs to try to talk to Mark Ellis and try and convince him that we all need to do our bit (and more preferably) Everyone one of us should be devout Leafy Greenies if we want to have any chance at all of saving the planet!  I despair when I see that there are still people in our community who actually believe that a love of the natural environment is stupid.  I can honestly say that there is now overwhelming evidence that proves  that it is the doubters and the anti environmentalists who are  destroying the planet.  It seems that Mark Ellis has put himself in this latter category!  Finally given his stance on environmentalists it is very hard to imagine that he has any emotional attachment whatsoever for the beauty of Piha.   So what are his interests in Piha?  Peter Daniel - Paraparaumu

21/9/07 NZ Herald SideSwipe: "Early one Sunday afternoon recently, while travelling north on the Southern Motorway, my car broke down.  I was unsuccecssful at getting hold of the AA on my mobile, so I just stood there with the bonnet up and hazard lights on.  Eventually a young man in a silver BMW pulled up and offered to help.  Turned out I needed water, so he popped my friend in his car and went to a petrol station to get a bottle.  When we realised it wasn't going to fix the problem, he took my friend and I to his car and used his mobile to call the AA.  After arranging the breakdown service to come out to us, he walked us back to my car.  The name of our good Samaritan?  Marc Ellis.  Thank you to Marc for ensuring the safety of two older ladies."

19/9  Who is the idiot who is totally defacing the natural beauty of Piha with all the yellow graffiti signs - exactly what are you trying to prove - I for one am pulling them down and throwing them in the bin where they belong - (it's not really a question Bobbie but I just had to have my say) - grow up and take a look at what you're doing -  very concerned resident

We should ask for bike racks in the carpark as a condition of the cafe consent maybe, if it goes ahead :-)

Trivia
Did you know that the name Kitekite Falls and track was officially changed by the NZ Geographic Names Board to Kitakita way back in the early 1990's but has never been accepted by the ARC and apparently most Piharians.  Not a lot of people know that.....Cheers Mark the Bounder.  (How do I go back on your site and find to re-read those wicked comments about the Cafe?)

13/9   I personally like Pete and he has never been rude nor abrupt with me - However I  think he is shooting himself in the foot by his tactics - I think his food is of a high quality and his coffee is great and I am all for supporting his scheme for a cafe - because isn't that the whole reason he has purchased the property at the rear of the store - So my vote is yes for a cafe but something in keeping with the "rustic" feel of Piha and I'm sorry I don't trust the "preserve Piha" label.  Norma, Piha Resident

11/9/07 : Well done R&R!   With all that's been going on lately its fantastic that you have shown the mature path down the road to democracy.

I agree that the stickers, the postcards and the signage all constitute visual pollution to me and its a shame that the ones that shout the loudest are the people that usually win out in the end. Rather than persuading me, it actually puts me off the cause.

10/9/07 Hi Bobbie

Stickers Defacing Piha Signs/Landposts etc.

Not sure if this is something we can get to the bottom of through your email tree, but I notice a number of structures (bins, signs, power transformers etc.) have had anti Piha cafe stickers placed on them.

Strikes me as unusual that the opponents of the cafe cite preserving Piha?s image etc. as one of the reasons why the cafe should not go ahead, yet they see fit to essentially place graffiti in the form of stickers over public property, which is many cases when removed will mark/deface what it has been stuck to.

Rather hypocritical conduct I have to say.  (If I catch the person who put one on my car . . . . ? Bobbie)

Rumour has it that the old Post Office building may be positioned on The Piha Stores property ????  (didn't someone mention parking problems??? - Bobbie)

Good news for democracy:  I had a chat to Tony, R & R President, tonight and he advises that the R & R are putting in a NEUTRAL submission while noting 'concerns' about waste water, sewage, parking and exclude the political or emotional issues of whether there should or shouldn't be a Cafe.  I admire Tony for this as he acknowledges they have no mandate to do otherwise having not held a public meeting.  7/9/07 Bobbie

Why bother involving yourself in surveys? like who cares?

Great thats even better the "straight to the point" I am looking forward to reading these and maybe making the occassional comment myself.  Well done, you are sooooo cool.

I say yes to a well managed local run café. I say no to the proposed owners with their arrogant self centered attitudes. Lets face it they hardly give a #@&# about the local environment or character that makes Piha unique. Does a café mean an increased attraction for bus & tour operators? Definetly yes, which is a huge concern. Changing the land use from residential to commercial provides the thin edge of the wedge providing a presidence which can open up the proposal for any other commercial venture in the area, Karekare too. I vote NO!        Great site girls keep up the good work

Great idea Bobbie.  Just what we need to rant and rave on.  Piha has been waiting for this to start and you guys seem to be the ones to do this sort of stuff.  Go you.

Well I must say I'm quite surprised by the poll results! Is it possible for you to also publish alongside the percentage results, the sample size (ie: the number of people who took part in the poll) as the percentages don?t really mean much without that information. For example, 75% of 10 people is one thing, but 75% of 300 people is quite another.

Hopefully not long before I can tell the beatoff in the General Store to (censored)!

Hell yes

Yes it's a great idea somewhere to bring the kids on a hot summers day!!

YES!-----Provided there's a POST OFFICE with it! How about "The Post Office Cafe". Let's think outside the square---more customers, more service.

As an ex-Aucklander and someone who still loves to get to Piha when I can when I'm up I say no to the cafe in the interests of keeping the beach as commercially low key as possible.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES...... (counted as one vote - Bobbie)

Dear Bobbie; you may wish to put this somewhere?

Thank you for the continuing information on the pathetic Piha café debate; luckily, I no longer consider myself a member of the community as I find it a disgrace to intelligent citizens.

Piha is a wonderful and magical place. But, time and tide halt for no man: if you try to keep this time-warp in its 1940s glory (the good old days?) then one day the dam will break and, as the habitation should know too well, the result will be devastating.

Just because Marc Ellis has a well-known face, and makes a lot of noise in the press, does he have to be painted as the face of Evil? This seems like a George W. style reaction, with which the perpetrators would most certainly not wish to be associated.

From a shop owner who spent his first years trying to be ruder than his predecessors (!) the rhetoric is a joke. His business thrives on coffee, yet he slams the coffee drinker at any chance, especially if they 'aren't from the Coast'.

A café in Piha that meant I could avoid the antics and moods of the Store would be a delight and permit me to enjoy the relaxed environment that I so savour.

Get over it, embrace the competition and make sure that customers are at last Welcome to the Piha Store; then all will thrive and prosper.

David  - Titirangi.

1. we want a cafe that doesn't litter the surrounds with takeaway coffee containers

2. we want a cafe where the owner doesn't act like he leased his site direct from jesus

two votes thanks, and one more for our unborn future generation (only xxxxxx xxxxx to go)

Hi, I think a non-alcohol serving cafe could be a positive thing, providing it is done in a West Coast friendly way, with locals consent!

I say no to this café leave piha the way it is that?s whats so great about it you can still be In Auckland but it feels like you are miles away from all the hussle and bussle of Auckland life

Ranui resident, frequent visitor in earlier years.A cafe would encourage me to come over for brunch.

A great idea, as long as it is done properly.

definitely would be a plus...let's face it, it's a cafe that's open till 7 pm and doesnt serve alcohol...it's not like marc ellis wants to slap a huge mall on piha beach..people come from all over the world to see piha, why not give em a cupof tea when they get there...where's your manners?

A definate No from me to the proposed "development" keep as much of the simple unspoiled character of the place as possible.

No
No
No  (counted that as one vote!!! - Bobbie)

If this confessed drug dealer wasn't an ex-all black the press and the establishment wouldn't have a bar of it. Piha - or anywhere else in NZ, for that matter - doesn't need any of his "let's make Mark Ellis rich" ventures. He might have once been "most popular TV personality" but he shouldn't be allowed any concessions and should be treated like anyone else when it comes to the resource consent act. But when it comes to Piha - his voice should be drowned out by the many local residents who are not ex all blacks, not "personalities', not rich, not on first name terms with top advertising executives -- just people who want to have the deciding say on what happens in their community. Wealth - and "personality" shouldn't buy privilege.

I think that the cafe is a great idea, I can't see that it will interfere too much with the RSA as it won't be serving alcohol and will also close at 7pm, we are all for it.  I would be interested to find out what the general feeling is of the responses you get.

YES please!!

YES - all for the cafe. I hope it gets the go ahead.

I think this is a wonderful idea.  Cheers.

No virus found in this incoming message.  (What's that got to do with a Cafe?)

Cheers.  The town needs it.  I am a visitor to Piha prob half a dozen times a year and think it would be a good hub for the community.  I don?t think the RSA is a realistic alternative for out of town visitors.  And as for the rip off that happens at the shop.  Over it!

Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail  (what's this got to do with a Cafe?)

Yes, yes, yes to the cafe. Two votes for yes. One from me and one from XXXXX  (they can't count either - is it something in the water?!)

Yep great idea and there should be a bit more choice out at Piha. Its not like its starbucks!! The boys will bring flavour as well as keeping it Piha.

Having resided and visited Piha since the 1940's I have always valued the non commercial environment at Piha. Please do not allow a flash cafe to be built at Piha--we don't need it.

support the idea of a café at Piha,? why not?, I have visited Piha for the last 40 years, I don?t see a problem with a small café,burt I think you would need to look at a play area for kids as well , so that mum & dad can relax in peace, and take in the beautiful beach countryside.

Would be a great to have a decent café out there?. Quite disappointing when you take overseas visitors out to Piha and no where decent to grab a bite.

Yes Yes Yes (You're only allowed ONE vote! Bobbie)

YES go the cafe...

Please put me down for a vote for the café and against those who wish to control private property.

YES! YES YES!! cafe at piha would be lovely! (Lots of people can't count! Bobbie)

Yes Good on you all. Always needed a low key cafe at Pihia. Will be in to have  something at the next XXXXXX reunion in 15 years time. Our175 years in NZ

As a resident of Muriwai, which has a café, I strongly recommend you let the café go ahead.

Simply. No.
This cafe doesn't offer anything further than what one can already get at the present stores at Piha.
For once, Leave things be. DON'T encourage more people out to Piha for the wrong reasons.  Fine if they want to swim, enjoy the beach and area and take their rubbish with them. But if they want that type of cafe food (which the dairy already supplies deliciously...) they can go to Ponsonby.

If we want brunch etc lets have it happen using existing infrastructure (surf club, bowler or RSA)   I think your 'chairpersons' stance is a good one - if only the RMA included a precautionary approach

I am interested in why there is no public meeting about this cafe. it is a rather controversial subject. My vote would be No.

Hi  thanks for this opportunity. It is strange that there is no public meeting planned yet especially when you see what hoops we had to jump through to replace and upgrade the playground - it was called the "council consultation process"   have they since changed their rules? Mmmm.               Anyway, I personally don't want a café in Piha, mainly because it may impact on the other local businesses. Our existing local businesses struggle through the winter months and quiet times as it is - they don't need any more competition. They also rely on the busy summer months to help them through those quiet times again, their profit would possibly reduced by introducing more competition.

Not a very scientific indicator of course!     Anyway, I am strongly in favour of a café. I am heartily fed up with the scungy venues and very mediocre fare available at present - and not legally selling to the public anyway. I feel too ashamed to take any of my visitors to anything in Piha except    (censored)      !!!

Yes...Yes....Yes...how much fun would it be to come back to a decent coffee and a thick wedge of cake after my morning exercise?? Or meeting a mate from town, you could sit outside on a good day and wallow in that view...

Dear Bobbie, Yes, yes, yes, for the café?.it was great catching up with you weekend before last? hope to see you both soon, ? love. ( censored !!! )

I have been laid up with a viral lurgy of some sort, so am only just getting on top of things.  Had a query from Patel wanting to know if I would like him to put a subm in on my behalf. Haha, . . .  as if  !!      I will be in touch before subms close. Thanks for all the news.

We're a divided lot in the (censored)  on this issue.   I have always favoured a Cafe.  However, that was until I read that they were   planning seating for 120 people....   My reaction......  "What, don't they know we do things on a small scale, and very gradually in   Piha, at least to start with !"   Planning for 40, would have got my yes vote, but 120 .... no thanks, sounds   too much like a Pak & Save Cafe and Car  Park to me, & doesn't go hand in hand with the "Preserve Piha" title.   (censored)  is sitting on the neutral fence, tho' after a discussion with his surfing mates today   I think his fence is now   leaning to the negative side.  I believe a Cafe will happen at some stage in the future. There used to be a Tea Rooms many years back, way before we came here to live, which was in (censored but a long time ago) . And those who wanted to use the service, used it. I understand it was very popular.    While Pete's Coffee at the Store is really great, and we will continue to buy his takeaway-coffee....and also continue to tell all the Tourists to go and buy it, there is also something nice about sitting in a 'tasteful' surrounds, out of the wind and rain, or sizzling sun..etc  ( whether the 'surrounds ' be a shop, cafe, Tearooms, call it whatever..... ) and enjoying a hot cuppa tea or coffee from a real cup, with a sandwich, or a pie, or a slice of quiche on a real plate........around a pleasant littl' table , chatting with friends. In short,I think that if a Cafe is done tastefully , it will certainly enhance the area, & provide a service for both Locals, and non-Locals, but   Low-key, small-scale please.  (My understanding is it will have seating for 35 - Bobbie)

Yes we have no problem with a cafe at Piha we had one for  years long ago and there were no prob then so why not now .

yes, but what about carparking?

Yes to café - but has to go with the environment - beach and bush theme.  Not ritzy city style - great with natural setting and enhancing local environment.

YES.  Cafe at Bethells is cool. Love going there, walking dog on the beach then having lunch.
Only open in Summer mind.   NZ Cafes and fodd are an intergral part of NZ   Better than that tiny dairy anyways. We live in Titirangi.

Its time the Piha locals stopped having too much say and control over a piece of New Zealand which is rightfully there for all New Zealanders to enjoy. A café is not going to ruin anyones idea of idilic tranquillity. Rather its a way of providing better services and hospitality to those who visit the area. And yes I am a Piha Local!!!!

we feel OK about the cafe as planned so i guess it is a yes.

Please don't get too upset with Marc - he is actually a great lad to have around...I think NZ needs more guys like him ...we are losing too many bright young people to terrible places like Australia and the UK

Can't see why there has to be a submission?  Isn,t it still a democratic society or are we back to 1940? Why not have a Cafe?

yes, one latte trim bowl please

Without stooping to low levels, whoever puts a cafe out there will be a complete idiot and ruiner only after a bit of money in their pockets.   If encouraging business is your plan - then by encouraging this "Preserve Piha" business, you're only stunting and hurting the true local Piha businesses that are already established and which deserve to be 'preserved'.

We are total party poopers. We believe that coffee is the beverage of the devil. (That's a little heavy isn't it?  Bobbie)I just like Piha to have no cafe. It may make it the only place in the universe without a cafe, but hey, that's the way I like it. I just think it sooo sad that we judge whether a place is hip or not according to whether there is a cafe or not. Christ, God has made the most magnificent beach and bush in the world here, what do we need a mere coffee shop for, it just totally destroys the khama or ambience of Piha.   On the environmental effect thing, over and above my totally emotional, gut response:  Waste water, Bore water, mix the two together what have you got? (not very nice coffee). Waste water treatment, hours of operation, waste water treatment, yuck.Anyway, if everybody else wants it, who am I to step in the way. I may as well sell up and move into Ponsonby. Let me know the results. Perhaps there will only be 2 against - and I'll know who they are. (Boring old farts)

I say No to the cafe. We don't need it. There are many other places around Auckland where people can get a beach and commercial stuff. We are about the only place near Auckland where you can get a beach and no commercial stuff. That makes us special - not just for those who live here but also for those who visit. Many of my friends, when visiting here, have commented about how lovely it is to have an old-fashioned beach community. Let's keep it that way!

GOod on you for doing this. Would be good if you could also forward the total results to all of us who took part!

Hi Bob, I really don't care unless, and its a very big UNLESS there is potential for them to get a liquor license. Then I would have to be vehemently opposed. The licensed outlets as they are now supposedly do not allow for indiscriminate drinking as they are all clubs. A licensed outlet not requiring membership opens up a whole new can of worms.

I say no to this café leave piha the way it is that?s whats so great about it you can still be In Auckland but it feels like you are miles away from all the hussle and bussle of Auckland life

Long black please?

Hi Bobbie   A big yes for the cafe at piha

Hi Bobbie,  my reply for the cafe thing is YES   thanks

Hi, we live here at Piha, and a family and child friendly café would be great. Thanks,

My parents bought sections on Garden Road in 1938 and my father built a lovely home for us in the 40's--the hard way--no power tools just good old fashioned hard work with a saw, hammer and nails. No mean feat during war times and the lack of building materials and paint.
We have years of such happy family memories there--no power, just a wood burning stove for cooking on and heating our bath water and Tilley lamps for lighting, a long drop toilet complete with fern fronds which could catch you by surprise if you needed to use the toilet in the night and the torch batteries were low.

Memories of Dad cutting the lawn with a scythe and carrying the food safe out to a cool spot under the trees and the billy of milk we collected from the bus each day resting safely in the stream at the bottom of the section to keep the milk fresh, even though Mum still scalded it ( Blerk!!) and expected us to drink it.

We knew the names of all the native plants, animals, fish, shells and  birds (every day was a nature study lesson on something) enjoyed Mr Byer's (the Ranger) awesome bush honey and fresh produce from his garden stall and all our visitors enjoyed walking in Nikau Grove and up to the Glen Esk Falls as well as going over to the Gap and spending days and evenings on that wonderful beach.

In the days before the road was sealed the Piha hill was a challenge--I can remember once when the corrugations were particularly bad, Dad had to reverse up the hill for traction and we all cheered when he succeeded to get the car and us up without loss of life or car--a fair bit of horn blowing to warn any cars that may have been coming down was used, but thankfully we were the only car on the hill climb at the time.

Piha was a wonderful place for everyone--we knew all the regulars and none of us drowned because we were taught water safety rules and how to recognise a rip  from an early age--and did the same for our children in the 70's and 80's.
I hope the next generations of children can also enjoy all the things we did there as children--such fresh air and unspoiled beauty of beach and bush and the lulling to sleep at night from the roar of the surf -- but not the sunburn now that sunblock is available..

It is amazing how unchanged Piha still is and it is imperative that it must continue into the future as one of the most beautiful and unique coastal areas of bush and beach, unspoiled by modern day commercial enterprise, in  New Zealand.

Congratulations to all who have fought the bureaucrats and developers so often over the years, to keep it that way.

My vote is most definitely ...NO... to the building of the cafe at the old Post Office building.  (I think some things have changed: haven't seen a scythe for a while nor anyone backing up a the road! - Bobbie)

Hi Bobby,

We are a couple in our 30s who go to Piha often to stay with friends who live there.  We have been against the idea of a cafe in Piha for various reasons.  Piha is one of the only little coastal villages in NZ ,so close to a huge city, which hasnt been commercialised and we are afraid this might be the beginning of the end to the village atmosphere that exists.  People go to Piha to get away from city life, to unwind, to remember how NZ used to be.  Sure a coffee and cake would be great, but at what cost.

I hear they are saying they would only expect 35 people a day.....Who did their research?  It must have been on a wet, winters day with a huge south-westerly blowing.  Try getting in the shop on a summers day.

HOWEVER, we have been so disgusted and surprised at the pettiness and bullying attitude of the guy who owns the shop we have changed our minds and support competition.  The things he has said to people we know, and things we have seen written in the shop about the cafe owners have been slanderous and disgusting and although he is obviously trying to protect his business, he has gone too far.  Who does he think he is?  We have been told he has bought the house at the back of the shop and has plans to develop his own cafe, so maybe he has plans to sell out to Starbucks too.  It seems that peoples true natures are being exposed through this event.

Good on you for doing this.  Maybe you should have a Piha blog on your great web site. (Blog under construction as I write - used to be able to multi-task but no more!!!  Bobbie with an IE not Y - although at times I get confused I am a female :-)  y is for boys)

Letter from Tony Dunn - President Piha Ratepayers and Residents, to Marc Ellis  4/9/07

Hi Marc,

I'm not sure if you are aware but a quote from one of your recent e-mailshas been used on the cover of the Piha News, that quote being: "we have found a replacement site for the Post Office (not because we had to but because we wanted to help). We have informed Tony Dunn R&R President of the replacement site and I am sure he is delighted with our gesture."

I am far from being delighted, I am actually extremely concerned that an incorrect statement has been made and my name included in it.

In short, a replacement site for the Post Office was suggested by you/your colleagues but has not proved to be suitable. (I communicated this back to Rich Hatton in July this year and have discussed it with Rich and Andy Higgs since). In the meantime the Residents and Ratepayers Association have independently negotiated with a local landowner a solution which is looking very promising. (Again, Rich and Andy know this). The Residents and Ratepayers Association are currently in dialogue with Waitakere Council to see what we need to do to make this happen as soon as possible.

Just for the record, here is the detail on what has actually happened: Marc Ellis / Preserve Piha Ltd made contact with the School Board who own land behind the Art Gallery. They asked if the School Board would look at placing the Post Office there. The representative of the School Board said he would be interested to hear more so they gave me his details so I could follow up on behalf of the Residents and Ratepayers Association, which I did.

Although the Residents and Ratepayers Association found the school board were receptive to the idea, they advised permission would need to be sought from the Ministry or Education who own the school board land. It quickly became clear the time frame for negotiating such permission would prove to be too long to save our Post Office (Preserve Piha Ltd need the Post Office removing before the proposed café is built) and so we continued our discussions with other Piha landowners to try and negotiate a permanent home for the Post Office. We are very optimistic that we have found a solution and are currently working through the planning process with all parties. This solution has come about without any assistance from Preserve Piha Ltd or Marc Ellis.

I would appreciate it if you could refrain from repeating the misleading comment that you have found a replacement site for the Post Office.

You'll note I've copied some other people on this in an effort to control the questions I am getting on this matter from the community.

Regards,Tony Dunn  President of Piha Residents' and Ratepayers' Association

PO Box 55, Piha  Auckland

and Marc Ellis's reply  same day

Dear oh Dear....

Tony with respect please climb down off your political soap box.

In addition to providing the R&R rent free use of the Post Office site since we took it over we have made various efforts to find you a replacement site, culminating in the lead we gave to the School board. This was done as a gesture of good will, no more no less.

If you were not delighted, perhaps you might have been.

In any event, I am happy that your have managed to find a site to your favor.

Sincerely Marc Ellis
