Piha Coastcare Trust is a Charitable Trust whose Trustees have a commitment to the following        

Piha Coastcare was registered as a Charitable Trust September 2009     

  • A general commitment to environmental sustainability
  • Commitment to subscribe to best practice in environmental restoration and conservation projects
  • A willingness to be pro-active 
  • Openness to other people and groups in the Piha Community and their interests 
  • A problem-solving approach

The inaugural trustees of the Piha Coastcare Trust are (alphabetical):

Bobbie Carroll: Has lived in Piha for nine years. Is co-ordinator of the Piha Beach Valley Road Project and is a member of the Coastcare Coordinating Group. Was co-coordinator of the National Dunes Restoration Trust Annual conference in Piha 2009. Has an accounting, travel, management and IT background.

Yvonne Dufaur: Has many years of experience as a consultant in the non-profit sector and has financial and management skills. Is a foundation member of the Piha Coastcare Coordinating Group. Lives permanently in Piha

Clare Feeney: an environmental consultant, educator and author with experience as a board member of charitable trusts dealing with both employees and volunteers. Clare is a long-standing member of Piha Coastcare and is currently building a permanent home in Piha

Pat La Roche: Piha Coastcare Coordinator for 7 years. Was co-organiser of the National Dunes Trust Conference in Piha this year. Lives permanently in Piha.

Nigel Mark-Brown: A consulting civil - environmental engineer with wide experience in resource management and consenting. Nigel's family has had a bach at Piha for 70 years and he is a founding member of the Piha Coastcare Coordinating Group.

Jeff McCauley - Expert in rare and endangered native plants, particularly in the Waitakere Ranges. Jeff has recently started his own business in this field. He lives permanently in Piha

Berend Westera - a Veterinary surgeon with a particular interest in birds and marine wildlife. Berend works in private practice and as a vet at the Auckland Zoo. He lives permanently in Piha

What does Piha Coastcare do?                                            

  • Piha Coastcare undertakes projects such as dune care and eliminating invasive weeds in response to community environment concerns.
  • Coastcare facilitates projects on public and private land in Piha to enhance the environment.
  • Provides opportunities for members and Piha residents to improve their knowledge of the natural environment
  • Piha Coastcare receives support from Waitakere City Council and Auckland Regional Council for technical advice and the supply of eco-sourced native plants for their projects.
  • Keeps members informed, through email, of coastcare events and environmental issues
