Piha - "Black Sands Lodge" Garden

Click for Piha Heroic Garden Photos

Black Sands Lodge, Piha, is on approximately 2500 sq metres.  It is bordered by streams, on two boundaries, that flow to Piha Beach.  We have several very old magnificent pohutukawa, clusters of mature cabbage trees, giant flax, nikau of all ages, karaka, kowhai, puka, astelia, oioi, hebe, native grasses and ground covers. Although we treasure our NZ natives we are not purists.  We have a display of hydrangea and hidden from public view a garden of favourite succulents.  It is a constant 'Work in Progress' as most garden are :-)

Bobbie suffers OGGS (obsessive gardening syndrome) and can be found in the garden, or stream,  most days.  Covered in dirt and water she is her happiest.

Above and below:  Two views of NZ Pohutukawa Tree - a focal point in our front garden.  We have three mature Pohutukawas in our front garden and several in our natural bush.Pohutukawa and rata belong to the genus  Metrosideros

BELOW:  One view, of part of our garden, taken at dusk with the last of the sun shining through.  Most of the trees you see are native Cabbage Trees except the one of the left iwhich is our one and only native Kauri Tree.  The Kauri Suite was named after this tree.

BELOW:  Some other native grasses with a native ground cover as a mat for them.

BELOW:  Some of the large native grasses planted on a bank - when the wind comes through they look great dancing together.

Below left: One of our garden paths edged by natives grasses and leading to nikau and our front steam.  Right: Nikau (Rhopalostylis sapida) in flower, with Karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus).on the left surrounded by iris and Puka in the background.

Just a few succulents have snuck into part of our front garden around the base of three special Nikau.

NZ's fabulous native Flax in full bloom.  The native Tui and Wood Pigeon (Kereru) go crazy over the nectar of these flowers.
