Speakers:

The following will be attending and making presentations at the 2009 Conference:

Dr Bruce Hayward: Bruce is a geologist and marine palaeontologist from Auckland, a lichen enthusiast and an expert on the European history of the Waitakere Ranges.

  • Bruce will describe for us the Geology of the Waitakere Ranges and West Cost Landscape and the historic changes that have taken place from the early Miocene period to the present day

Mark Dean:   Mark is a nurseryman from Tauranga and Chair of the Dune Restoration Trust, and has a long involvement with restoring native vegetation of dunelands in New Zealand. He was also the driving force behind the Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust.

  • Mark will tell us about the Dune Restoration Trust and its work

Greg Jenks:  Greg is a coastal vegetation consultant with Wildlands in Tauranga.  He has extensive experience in working with community care groups.  He is a trustee of the Dune Restoration Trust.

  • Greg has had extensive experience with many different models of community involvement in Dune Restoration.  He will examine the effectiveness of different models used around New Zealand.

Professor Paul Kench:  Paul is a geomorphologist at Auckland University.  His research includes sediment and wave movement, estuaries and coral reefs.  He is involved in studies on sand movement on the Auckland west coast and Kaipara Harbour.

  • Paul will outline the large scale sand movements affecting the Auckland West Coast

Dr Mark Bellingham: Mark is a coastal planner and ecologist, who established the Te Henga/Bethells Beachcare group in 1993 and is the current coordinator. This group manage dune vegetation, shore and seabirds, people and dogs on another busy West Coast beach.

  • Mark will talk about restoring back dune ecosystems and will relate this to the Te Henga back dunes, in preparation for Friday?s field trip

Chris Ferkins:  Chris is Environmental Coordinator for Parks Planning at Waitakere City Council.  He has pioneered streamside revegetation techniques in Waitakere City, where he works with community groups, landowners and businesses on restoration and community participation.

Field Trips:

Piha - Thursday 19th

An examination of the dune restoration work that has been carried out on Piha Beach and the problems the dune system faces with  huge visitor numbers and the conflicting aspirations of different groups of beach users.

Te Henga / Bethells Back Dunes - Friday 20th

A tour of the 20 years of back dune revegetation at Bethells Beach.  Much of this planting has been the single-handed work of the late Dave Norton, assisted by local volunteers.  Dune forests are being restored to stabilized dunes.

Muriwai - Friday 20th

Muriwai has the classic problem of buildings and structures in an actively eroding dune system.  See how the Auckland Regional Council are coping with the dynamic coastline and locals with strong views about everything.  You need a degree in diplomacy for coastcare here!

Whatipu - Saturday 21st  (optional extra)

The trip will start at Karekare and we will walk down the beach to look at the extensive coastal wetlands, dune management work and wildlife protection work on the dunes and wetlands.

Whatipu beach stretches from Karekare (south of Piha) to the North head of the Manukau Harbour entrance.  As you will hear from the conference speakers, this beach has only appeared in the last 100 years!! Our hosts Alison and Marnie from Friends of Whatipu will meet us at Pararaha.

We will look at the major sand movements that have taken place and the flora and fauna on the back dunes.  Whatipu's very special qualities mean that it has been given status and protection as a ?Scientific Reserve?.  We will hear about the predator control programme for NZ dotterel.  Expert botanists and ornithologists may well be rewarded with sightings of rare plants and birds and extensive ?natural? Pingao dunes to be seen.

It is about 1 ½ hours walking on a flat beach to Tunnel Point (the furthest point).  We should be back at Piha by 2pm.
