When the residents and property owners of Beach Valley Road, Piha, first met we settled on four objectives for our project: Eradicate weeds : replace with natives : pedestrian safety : vehicle safety.

29th May 2010: Beach Valley Road, Piha: Traffic Calming Measures
Description of Works:
As part of WCC Minor Safety Programme the following works are proposed to commence in the near future. The proposed works has been approved by the Waitakere Community Board.
- Construction a pedestrian walkway (intersection of Beach Valley Road / Seaview Road (not requested by BVR Project. Piha R&R asked for this)
- Install 3 speed humps - Beach Valley Road
- Extend existing post and rail timber barrier - Beach Valley Road to Milk Track
For properties outside the work limits, works will have no impact on their road frontage, however they may be impacted by traffic delays and normal construction noise etc.
Construction Project
Construction is proposed to commence on or shortly after the 31st of May and is expected to take approximately 2 weeks to complete depending on the weather and ground conditions encountered.

13/8/09: Update: Pedestrian Safety at 'The Circle & Milk Track' Beach Valley Road Piha: The plans for community consultation to increase pedestrian are done. This will work well with the group working to have safe walking for the whole of Piha: Here it is [152kb] pdf

11/6/09: Pedestrian Safety at 'The Circle & Milk Track' Beach Valley Road. Great news that WCC, our partners in this project, have plans now, following our discussions and meetings (see below), to extend pedestrian safety up the southern side of BVR to the Milk Track. 22/2/09 After discussing roading maintenance with WCC we have agreed on the following:
Clean the sand off the road sides at the Y junction just below Sylvan Glade - DONE
Remove two horizontal rails as marked (one opposite road to surf club, and one opposite No. 25 Beach Valley Road for pedestrian access to the walkway
Blocked culverts under the road in front of Brockie's leading to Moana Stream - ARC responsibility DONE
Improve pedestrian and vehicle visibility on Y intersection between #58 & #39 DONE
Existing sandy path to be widened for pram access - in front of #58 DONE
2 X toilet signs showing public toilets visible from the road DONE
Replacement reflectors requested for all vertical posts adjacent to roadway DONE
Fix missing horizontal barrier outside No. 9 Sylvan Glade DONE
Blocked inlet opposite No. 54 Beach Valley Road DONE
Remove flax from northern side of Moana Stream to free up walkway in front of #35 & 37 DONE see photos 4a below
Remove weeds along bank opposite Moana Stream to behind the bollards ready for planting and trim vegetation back to behind bollards. DONE
Put drainage under walkway on uphill side of speed humps near #50 & #19 DONE
On the list for later:
Pedestrian strip requested from RSA to Seaview Road - WCC to investigate options as a possible consultation and implementation next financial year.
Extend safe walkway from Beach Valley Road, around the corner to meet Milk Track, including safety bollards same as the corner of Beach Valley and Sylvan Glade. Under investigation and consultation.

Grading the sides of the Beach Valley Road
Public toilet signs x 2
Machine remove all weeds on bank in front of #35 & 37 ready for possible planting next winter
Remove all flax on the side of Moana Stream opposite #35 & 37 down to toilets and grade for pedestrians Remove all vegetation, except pohutukawa, at apex of the Y intersecton between # 35, 37 58. This is to enable traffic coming from both sides of Y roads to see each other and to allow pedestrian movement between pohutukawa.

Clean out water pipes under road that feed into Moana Stream. One side is blocked.
- Open up bollards for pedestrian entry outside #58
Extend yellow 'no parking' markings on western junction of Sylvan Glade and BVR to the walkway
Maintainence of reflective markers on all bollards
Fix / upgrade storm water pipe in front of #31
Add entrance to walkway opposite # #19, 25 & 29
Put drainage under walkway on uphill side of speed humps
Look at slowing traffic down between #17 13 & 11
Remove flax in front of 20km sign outside #34
Extend safe walkway from milk track in front of #32, 34 & 36 to meet current one on the southern side of Beach Valley Road toward beach for pedestrian safety
Add yellow no parking road markings along this 'safe walkway' (above)
Pedestrian safety from RSA up the northern side of Beach Valley Road to the front of #17 then provide safe movement to cross the road to safe walkway on northern side
Pedestrian safety from RSA down toward the intersection with Seaview Road.
